Description I don't see how its funny. to me its a beautiful and diverse world that still has yet to be explored. They Call it the boring planet? I don't think so... FAR from it. It has one of the most interesting formation times and unusual magnetic fields. A massive system of moons as diverse as Jupiter or Saturn, and very interesting and complex clouds if you look at them in the right light. amazing seasons that leaves north or south pole in dark or day for 42 years on, because my goodness it is sideways.
yes, i am talking about the planet Uranus.

Ive always had a soft spot for the planet Uranus. <3 Though it never helped that people couldn't see past its name.
When i was younger i dreamed of a spacecraft that would explore this planet in a Galileo styled mission. though nothing has actually happened. uranus was only explored once in 1986 by a spacecraft named Voyager 2, it was only a flyby using vintage 1970s technology, and we have not gone back. At that time only the South pole of the moons could be seen as they were in daylight. we still have yet to see the North pole. We better get there before we cant see it again and have to wait 84 years for it to come around again. D :

In this picture the Herschel spacecraft flies past a major moon of Uranus named Miranda. i strongly beleave that the moons of uranus will be far more interesting then what the Voyager 2 saw. We thought the moons of jupiter and saturn were boring too, until we went back to see.

Cryovolcanic plumes on Miranda anyone?

Maybe I can try to re-create that in Cinema 4D.

Yeah, on Miranda it's really weird that it probably has the same way that Rom'tetho-distrollis'ottella orbits but then passed Uranus's Roche limit and got torn apart, then the pieces got out of Uranus's Roche limit and then formed back again and the orbit is no longer likeΒ Rom'tetho-distrollis'ottella anymore.

yeah i really wonder, this is why we need to go back to Uranus and understand these things better!

the most unloved planet next to mercury maybe

i agree! at least mercury does not get laughed at if anyone even mentions it. i hate when people say Uranus is boring, how is it boring its got tons of moons, rings and a really strange magnetic field, never mind what it could teach us about solar system(s) formation and all that good stuff.

Indeed, Uranus IS the next great planet of mystery.Β  Humanity only had a fleeting look at it in early 1986, as will we have of Pluto in July, 2015.Β  I have been following Uranus for years, viewed it with my Celestron-11 scope at 116x and more.Β  Also have depictions of the planet in my gallery and popularized a proposed "Herschel" orbiter probe when I blogged for NASA and on Twitter.Β  Uranus is less than 2 degrees from a totally eclipsed Moon AM of Oct. 8, 2014.Β  I can now just barely detect it with the naked eye in Pisces.Β  Β

Indeed

Awsome, ive always wanted a spacecraft named Herschel to explore Uranus, it would be the perfect name as William Herschel discovered Uranus. like Cassini with Saturn, and Galileo with Jupiter. It was only obvious for the next planet out. though sadly the name Herschel was taken by a Space Telescope instead. : / Though I'm still happy with the Uranus Pathfinder idea. (if it ever becomes a reality)

I would certenly love to see it during October 8. I still have yet to see Uranus and Neptune with our 12 in reflector. Its a bit of a challenge in the city, and the weather/mosquitoes never seems to be happy with us. but its ok, the planets arnt going anywhere.
