Backstory:Β
Celestia was born on the Isle of Zenith and raised by her parents Equinox and Solstice. After 100 years, Equinox and Solstice felt a calling to places beyond the world of Equus. They delivered their children to the mainland of Equestria in a small city atop a mountain known as Canterlot. The ponies were shocked and astounded seeing not only two powerful gods, but to hear their plea to take care of their infant children. They graciously accepted their offer and looked over Celestia and Luna.

This marked the founding of a religion known as Solunism. It was centered around Equinox and Solstice being the two divine beings that created Equus, along with Celestia and Luna being gods as well. Since Celestia and Luna were the only alicorns they have ever seen, it was deemed that it was a symbol of divinity and that alicorns had a destiny to fulfill for all of pony kind. Time would slightly cloud history, memories of Equinox and Solstice would fade and it would not help that Celestia and Luna were too young to know of their parents. It would alter history in such a way that the origin of the world would once again remain unknown and the appearance of Celestia and Luna would be nothing less than a mystery. The only thing that would try to show Celestia and Luna the truth of their parents' existence are vague dreams of them coming back to a family they once remembered.

However, the ponies of Canterlot soon realized that a mountaintop was not ideal for the young alicorns and made a new settlement not too far away from the mountain's base. As Celestia and Luna grew into their childhood, their pony guardians realized time does not affect them in the same fashion. A decade passed and yet the two alicorns did not age. Still realizing they had a great purpose for their kind, construction of a castle for their rule began. Many years would come to pass as Celestia and Luna entered their 'teenage' years. A great sorcerer known as Starswirl would tutor them on using their magic. It was during the early months of this training that Starswirl would realize the two sisters had powers beyond his comprehension. This rewrote the conception of the schools of magic and added a new class of magic known as Divine. Celestia's school of magic focused around Light, whereas Luna's was oriented with Void. During this time, Starswirl also realized Celestia was aging more rapidly than her sister. It started out as a few inches, but evolved more as Celestia entered puberty. It made Luna quite envious at the time. Nearing the end of Starswirl's teachings, both Celestia and Luna were capable of using their magic to control the sun and moon. However, Starswirl felt that only Celestia was mature enough to lead his people. Celestia and Luna would dwell in their completed castle as Celestia was crowned Princess of Equestria. Her rule would be named the Solar Dynasty, a kingdom that would prosper for hundreds of years.

During Celestia's initial rule, events such as the arrival of Discord, Tirek, and King Sombra would come and pass. Celestia and Luna were proud to stand together to fight for the peace and safety of Equestria.

A short time later, Luna's jealousy over her sister would continue to manifest. She would eventually challenge her sister's rule. It pained Celestia to do so, but she regretfully resorted to using the Elements of Harmony after her sister was transformed into Nightmare Moon. Her sister may have been defeated, but at a great price. Nightmare Moon was banished into the moon, the spell not fading for a thousand years. Celestia would then abandon their castle and migrate back to Canterlot, establishing that as the new capital of Equestria.

970 years would come to pass and Celestia would meet the acquaintance of the hippogriffs, lead by the charming Queen Novo. Celestia would strengthen this friendship more and more, until eventually Queen Novo wanted enter a relationship with her. Shocked her proposal, Celestia happily said yes and have ever since.

On the thousandth year of the Summer Sun Celebration, Nightmare Moon returned. Celestia had prepared for this day, but would make the fatal error of underestimating her sister's capabilities. Nightmare Moon would overcome every and any obstacle that Celestia threw at her. Nightmare Moon would mock her, stating that for the entire time of her banishment she would plot to overthrow Celestia. That did not stop Celestia from trying. A great war raged between the two of them: the Solar Dynasty against Nightmare Moon's newly established New Lunar Republic. Nevertheless, Celestia would be bested. Without Celestia, the Solar Dynasty began to crumble and be absorbed into the New Lunar Republic.

After her defeat against Nightmare Moon, Celestia's punishment was to be outcast into the dream realm for an indefinite amount of time. This was done by putting her into a slumber the likes of which has never been seen, like a coma or some kind of death sleep. She is alive in the physical world, but trapped in the world of dreams. She has essentially taken the role to help ponies overcome their nightmares, but also uses it as a means to talk to Nightmare Moon as a means to demand for her release. She has reached out to many ponies to aid in her escape. Even though many would want to help, they are afraid of being overwhelmed by the New Lunar Republic's strong presence in Canterlot. Her best hope was in her lover, Queen Novo. To this day, the hippogriffs are still preparing for the inevitable battle to free Celestia within the crystalline depths of the Canterlot caves.

Is it a coincidence that her horn is segmented and has a similar curvature(but not as 'angled') as Chrysalis?

It is! I liked that Chrysalis' horn was curved and became something truly iconic about her appearance. It started with Nightmare Moon's design initially, but then Celestia's and their parents' horns also had some fun tweaks to make their horns just as unique as they are. It's also based on just how powerful their magic is. Celestia and Luna are demigods when it comes to their power, while Solstice and Equinox are gods entirely. Regular mortals and godwoken (powerful mortals like Starswirl) are not able to have their horns altered nearly as dramatically as demigods and gods. When I was designing Nightmare Moon, I had the idea of using Diana's weapon from League as a reference into her horn design. It was a lot of fun trying to add small easter eggs here and there

That's a stunning, beautiful design for her. She looks way more like a Sun Goddess would. Her show design is nice but not really sun centered to me.

I definitely like her show design, but what you are feeling is exactly how I felt. Her design needed to be based around the sun. Bright and warm colors. Firey, almost but still elegant.

Great backstory there (digging the Novolestia angle you're taking!), and an interesting alternate design there as well! Gonna be interested to see what else you produce for character designs in this alternate universe...!
(curious about what the Novolestia means for Princess Skystar...)

Do you have a headcannon design for your ponies?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AstralMelodia In reply to FountainStranger [2018-03-05 04:05:44 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure I'm following. The ponies I design are their designs? If anything is a headcannon in the AU, it will be canon.

If you're talking about other ones yet to be unveiled, I don't have a visualization of any other characters outside of the ones featured in my gallery at the moment. In order to start the design, I need to develop that character's backstory and other key elements regarding their personality. Once I have that, I start to work on designs. The issue with other characters is that I have not developed many yet. Currently the mane 6 and many other characters are just blank slates because I've been focused on geography, the planet's timeline, and the most powerful creatures that have affected Equus in some way. So for example, Nightmare Moon and Celestia have vastly different color schemes. Celestia has warm colors whereas Nightmare Moon has cool colors. While Nightmare Moon was a collaborative effort, Celestia was entirely me. So at this point I had warm colors, and similarities to Nightmare Moon. Celestia isn't as keen on functional armor since she has been focused on peace so her armor needed to be adornments rather than protective.

That's some of the process I have in character design. The primary thing is that personality, relatives, and backstory play a very large factor when devising a character design. Not all of those have to be equally important for it. Solar Flare, for example, was like 80% backstory and 20% personality. Without having any similarities, many people saw Solar Flare as an OC rather than an AU Celestia and I struggled to convince those people otherwise. I'd say this AU Celestia here has a fairly equal distribution of personality, relatives, and backstory.Β

Designing will be a case-by-case matter.

Not sure if that helps answer your question though.

You know how people will make they’re own designs for how each species of pony looks?

Oh like that? Hmm. I might. I know I'll be showcasing race spotlights like I did with the Nuada. The native ponies of Aoewahia will have some differences, but that's all I know at the moment. They are essentially an indian tribe, aboriginals who continue to stick to their heritage and traditions. Crossbred races have this potential too. Heck, I could even vary a race's appearance based on region. That's how Kirin are in this AU. They are the unicorns of Farendel. I can at least say that there is to be some significance in their appearance based on having dragons live near them and why some of the kirin were transformed into lamias. It won't be as wildly different as a hippogriff to a seapony.

The New Lunar Republic is strong, very strong. In an AU I have yet to write, my OC is but one of many of the NLR's special forces. Wolves are creatures of the night, so naturally they would flock to the Empress of the Night in droves, vowing to be her most powerful and staunch guardians. Though the idea is that one of them doesn't quite like the idea of "endless night" because it means the pray his people hunted for centuries are all asleep and in hiding, so he allies himself with, as I'm calling them, Day Dreamers. Ponies who dream of daylight returning and saving them from starvation and the oppressive rule of Empress Moon. At the same time... it makes me wonder how I'd use my Twilight/OC ship since, in the NLR lore, she's Nightmare Moon's student and devoted to her princess. Seemingly just as specieist as any other Canterlot Noble, though she's better at staving it off.

The curved horn threw me off, but I love everything about the rest of her! The colors in particular are wonderful!

Nightmare Moon's horn is wildly curved and Celesta herself didn't really have any iconic features, so to give her something that would make her stick out I turned to her horn. Nightmare Moon's was a replica of Diana's weapon. Her dark magic warped her horn into that shape along with her growing additional horns as well. Celestia's horn is much more tame. I'd like to think that not all horns should be straight and vary only by length. It helps give them more uniqueness I feel.

I find it a bit ironic that Celestia is the one to dwell and travel in dreams but this fact offers quite a few possibilities for stories.Β With her ability to reach out, there are many ways this could go. She could try to reform her sister or appealing to her lover for help. She could also be passive and accept her fate in the face of a possible war and continue to aid ponies in their dreams.

I like the backstory. I also like how you included Queen Novo, can I ask you where the realm of hippogriffs would be? In the MLP movie it was quite silly that she was in a sea beneath Canterlot, both the fact that there was a sea and that the Canterlot royalty had no idea somepony had a kingdom there.

Her design also shows some inspiration taken from Solar Flare with more fiery red tones but ultimately, it remains a charming and pleasant form, unlike your designs of Solar Flare herself where she looked like a boiling volcano of rage.

I'm pretty certain that a sea beneath Canterlot isn't canonical? Mount Eris is on the farthest southern point of the map, with Seaquestria being underneath Mount Eris. Well, fake news or not, the intent is that hippogriffs and seaponies are far beyond the reaches of Equestria's territory.

Regarding Celestia in the dream realm, yeah! I like how open ended her position is because it gives me a lot of possible story arcs. You'll come to find that even though peace might be maintained, it doesn't mean everyone is happy with each other. The Kirin also have tensions with Nightmare Moon, but they approach the problem differently. You'll see soon

Is that for a fact? Well, that makes things a lot more reasonable. I've always found it hard to piece the canonical map together with so many versions and alterations out there. I suppose it makes sense, since other locations from the movie seem to be in the south. I suppose I should wait till you establish other things before jumping to conclusions.

I have to say, I am quite enjoying myself so far. Though I arguably have my own AU which I might turn into a story, I am excited to explore yours. Celestia is a good place to kick things off.

If you refer to my map, all canonical points are where the official post-movie map says they are. This includes the storm kings realm and mount Eris, Equestria being underneath it. I'd have to find it again to link it. Maybe later this evening I can

Up unti the unspeakable abomination that went with Nightmare Moon (and I refuse to even name it. Even having read the description.) I liked it.

Now. Well you loose a few points for that. But I still love this.
