Description
Been quite some time since I've drawn Spyce. (aside from her recent ref sheet). So here she isha, oh my. Apparently it's been so long since I've drawn her that I totally spaced the fact that she has a red muzzle

Please pay no attention to the star-rating, the critique is what matters. The stars are only rated to allow submission.
First of all: I like how you painted the horse itself. You really managed to capture the shiny texture of their fur really well and I also really like how the muscles show so well. Great work!
The tail is also done beautifully as is the mane, but I feel like the plucks of hair near the hooves (the back hooves) don't blend in as beautifully as the rest of the manes. Same goes for the horn, which feels a bit disconnected from the horse.
I also wish you'd have done something a bit more .. special with the background. The reflection of the unicorn helps the viewer place the animal in it's environment, but somehow it still feels a bit out of place since the gradient gives a more 2D-like feeling, whilst the horse is painted beautifully, lifelike and 3D.
That being said: it's a really good drawing. I just think it may need a bit of a background-tweak.

I think you found all the areas where I did get a bit sloppy/lazy with this. Thank you for your feedback

You're welcome. And I can understand that working on a big piece like this can get tiring, especially after having rendered the sheen on the fur so perfectly.

Oh the sheen wasn't really all that bad.. the hair on the mane and tail drove me up the wall though, I think I wanted to stab my eyes out by the time I was done with that tail!

hair tends to have that effect.
I usually go crazy after having detailed the line-art in the hair. And that's also usually where I give up for the day.

hair always flares up my carpal tunnel really badly too.. so I hate it but goodness it's so pretty when done well!

I am completley stepping out of my own field of knowledge so if this seems redundant or inappropriate I apologize in advanced.
There are two things that grab me about this image right away that I suspect are not the easiest things to do: The gradient background and the reflection. The gradient is sharp and complementary to the main image and really pleases the eye. it's simple and yet mysterious- the reflection making me wonder if the unicorn is wandering out on the wet sand at sunset or perhaps after something terrible has happened to make the sea red? The reflection makes me curious because it's more the suggestion of a reflection.
The coat is wonderful and life-like and I don't imagine the sheen is easy to render. Others may think black is simple but I know making the suggestion of something using black and white can be difficult.
Overall a simple yet efficient and powerful image. In all honesty the horn is the only thing I don't buy- though I dont spose you get the opportunity to sketch such things from real life e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="

Thank you. That horn.. it really could use more work. Perhaps I will work on it more one of these days

The first thing I notice here is that there is not a lot of contrast between the horse and the background. This is one of those situations where too much brightness in the background would throw the piece, but upping the brightness of the background just a little bit might help. Something about the light source also bothers me, but I can't quite pinpoint what it is. The horse is very well drawn though, and seems anatomically correct to me. The tail looks like the mane (if that's what'd you call it <<; ) is too heavy for the long tail to hold up, but is very well drawn nonetheless.
Overall, a very nice job. Keep it up! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="

Lovely. Simple, elegant, and the colors- though often cliche, seem magical and mysterious here. Great work. <3

She's so gorgeous! I love her tail and how it flows so nicely, especially the part on the ground. The rendering of her horn, too, is awesome. It looks like a strand of DNA. The shading you did on this kicks ass. Awesome.

This turned out good. I couldn't see a lick of it on the stream though. It's much more clear now. Nice job with the reflection too.

Thanks hon, I actually edited it a bit since there were a few things I didn't pay much attention to last night with it being so late and all.
