Description
The days had gone by in a blur for the healer. He tended to his own wounds as best as he could. Preparing for a chance to escape. He was restless and desperate. His heart ached for Aspen and his cubs. He constantly wondered how they were. Had the cubs grown more? Had they discovered some new part of life without him to witness it? It was almost enough to drive him mad as he paced back and forth with frustration. A few of his empire mates that had been caught with him attempted to calm the temperamental healer but all they received in return was a sharp glare or hiss. Unless it was talk of escape he didn't want to hear it.

The only thing that distracted him was the few times he instructed those around him on how to best care for their wounds. His herbs had been taken from him along with his armour and left him feeling defenceless. Vulnerable. He was only too aware at just how easily he could be hurt without it.

However, things didn't stay the same for long. Next thing he knew there was an influx of hunters and guards. Dragging out the stone empire captures and even some others. He soon found himself shoved into a tight gated cage. He turned to make a vicious snap at the nearest feline but found the cage door slammed behind him before he got the chance to get a hold of them.

Turning with angry flare of his nostrils and huffing he gazed out into the sun behind the bars. It hit him instantly. He was staring out into the coliseum through the bars that held him. What was going on? He squinted into the sun and observed quietly the event unfolding around him. Feeling a chill slowly creep through his veins as it all registered. He saw Boudica. Heard the words of Judas, the hunters leader. What kind of chaotic madness was this?

Next thing he knew the wild pigs had been released. His eyes darted around, disturbed by the whole situation. He didn't even register the empire mates caged around him as they yowled in protest and fear. While he stared around wildly his eyes caught sight of a familiar pelt. Udi?!

Udi didn't hesitate to jump to the chained silvers defence. He was alone in the effort. Struggling against the hoard of wild beasts.

Mercury stepped forward shaking. He was going to be forced to watch them die?!

A clash of metal against metal distracted him. A gate had swung open and another cat joined the fight. A captured cat. He quickly understood and immediately made the signal to open his own gate. He wasn't about to leave the cat that had become like a father to him and his empires silver all alone in this fight. His gate swung open as soon as his signal was seen. He made the movement to race out and join the fight but he suddenly lurched to a hesitant stop.

What about Aspen? Tulsi? Parsley? Ginkgo? What would they do without him if he died here?

It was an almost certain possibility he thought as he observed the increasing chaos in the ring. He was a healer in a ring of fighters and wild beasts. While he could fight he was on expert. Aspen wouldn't blame him for staying out of it, he knew that. She would understand his desire to stay alive for his family. But would he be able to forgive himself if he let them die without making any action to save them. It brought conflicted tears to his eyes. Yet it was only an instant before he made his decision.

He sent an apology to his mate back home. Swore a promise to his cubs to return to them and finally raced into the ring. As tears fell from his eyes he couldn't help but wonder. Will I see you again?

Bloody chaos surrounding him as he dodged and ducked. He made a beeline for the protective circle that was starting to take shape around Boudica.

OH WELL guess who couldn't help but involve himself in this deadly game!

This is a submission for the Stone/Hunter/City event When Hogs Run Wild .

Of course Mercury doesn't hesitate at first to throw himself into the fray to protect Udi and Boudica. But, he takes a moment to think back to Aspen and his cubs waiting for him in Stone Empire and wonders if he'll ever see them again. (Which I assure you all that he shall. Boi ain't dying yet.)
