What I do to shade is I go over it entirely with the darker color (usually dark purple) and I erase the places the "light touches" and leave the shadows. Its just easier than coloring in the shadows to erase them were they shouldn't be!
Like if its an orb I color it all purple, then erase the top part, change the opacity and style of the purple and bam, shading!
