Description A tutorial taking you through the basics of the masking tape technique for collaged backgrounds.

This tutorial focuses on getting a grungy vintage effect, but you can use other colours to get completely different finishes - lots of glazes in reds and umbers will give you a Moroccan leather feel; or you can go for pastels, silvers and pearlescent acrylic inks for a whole 'nother look.

The colours can be as intense or as washed out as you like - more layers of colour will give deeper effects, using babywipes to wipe off almost all the paint in each layer will create a much more muted palette.

You can also use glaze medium to thin the paint before you apply it - don't use water (and don't use watercolour paint) because that makes the tape soggy and causes it to lift off the background card.

You can also vary the effect by the way you apply the tape - you can go for a very regular (up-and-down or side-to-side, or regimentally crosshatched) finish, or go really chaotic and messy, tearing ends rather than cutting them, and layering at random angles.

You will need to finish off the back of the card by covering the tag-ends of the tape with a white sticky- label, or glue on a covering of decorative paper.

Have fun!

I love the effects and the skewer idea is genius! On my list of techniques to try, for sure! Thanks for making it so user-friendly!

The skewer idea was born out of desperation. The tube of gold paint had lost its cap (how does that happen?) and was totally gunged up. So I had to push a skewer in to get any paint out at all ... and then I discovered it made an interesting applicator!

Necessity is a great motivator! I was playing around with this last night, and the only problem is that the backgrounds are way too nice to stick things on. So now I have a bunch of little beautifully colored bits, like parts of a stained glass window. I guess I need to adjust my head and just slap things down. But I am definitely having trouble doing it...so there the so-called backgrounds sit.

A "Jammerlappen" in german is what you would call a weakling or wuss in English. Funny!

nice tut!

That's so funny! (And at least you know how to pronounce jammerlappie, then. I thought of trying to explain it to the Americans and Brits on dA, but couldn't figure out how to depict the "j" sound!)

Wow, this is awesome! I've always wondered how people achieve this effect (I totally fail at painting so I couldn't figure it out, LOL). Thank you so much!
