PAPER HEARTs
love is an art that is felt by the heart

It is hard to make others see things the way I do-- simply because they are not me... But perhaps after reading this, you might find, I might find, that maybe we're more a like than I think..

Although love is usually associated with a feeling towards others, I believe that the truest form of love is perhaps obsession. Obsession over... something intangible. For me, my love is music and art, as it will remain to be forever. But why is it the truest form of love? Unlike people, art and music will not wait for you; they will not forgive you. (Have you ever fallen for a person out of their pure persistence?) You love them (oh beautiful music and art) and yet they could never love you back... but you still race on... after them. But like family and friends, they can soothe you and you can go to them when there is nothing else..

Symbolism:

1. When I draw or play/listen to music... reality melts away (as cheesy as that may sound, haha) and I'm free from stress and other worries. The picture of me in the poster is blurred because I have already faded into my "dream world."

2. The "bubbles" of light floating around me emphasize this surrealistic world I've created for myself.

3. I wore a white shirt because like how white is a symbolism of purity, fine arts is the purest form of love. (to me anyways)

4. The viola is drawn in as opposed to a real viola because as I have stated above, my love for music and art is an intangible love. Though it may lead to love towards materialistic things (such as copic markers or a grand piano).

5. Background is a dusk setting because it is the time before sleep... time before dreaming. And stars are so dreamy anyways.

6. The font used for "Paper Heart" is called BitterSweet which can be well related to both my love for music and art. Though they are my sanctuary for everyday life (Sweet), music and art can often betray when a piece is too hard for me to sightread or when I fail to draw the perfect picture I had imagined in my mind. (Bitter)

7. A bass clef was used (not only because it creates a lovely heart) because like how the bass clef in piano music is usually for harmony (and not melody) music and art is usually thought to be the harmony in the idea of love. (Love of another person is the melody, the line that everyone hears and universally understands.) But even if this harmony isn't widely accepted, it is special to me.

8. And it's composed by (as opposed to "directed by") because even if he didn't write the "music" (script movie), Mr. Jasenovec still put the whole thing together.

Paper Heart means to me of an undecided love. Because whatever goes on paper is temporary-- something you can easily scrap if you make a mistake (like a draft). Though every love may start as "paper hearts..." only true love will grow from a simple sketch, that little pick up note, into a masterpiece of sight and sound. -- Or, a wonderful person who means the world to you.

It's good to finally find someone who feels the same way about music as me I honestly don't know what the world would be like if we didn't have it.

I love your entry. The symbolism is wonderful and beautifully constructed as is the pisture itself.

I'm so glad you liked it and that it has touched you. Lol, cheesy I know, but that's my aim with my art, to reach out to people and sympathize.

CreativeClara In reply to aternity [2009-08-06 01:14:24 +0000 UTC]

haha that's a very interesting question. well for one thing, the viola was drawn well. in my opinion, the violin would be a better instrument to represent because of its ability to be strong and soft, and it is a very well known and popular instrument. (perhaps that is because i play the violin? prob. . . ) i also thought the bass cleft was a very wonderful && unique idea. i agree with you how you said "When I draw or play/listen to music... reality melts away" which is very true to me also (yey cheesiness! <3) all your meanings and symbols are very powerful, tying this picture together nicely, especially paper being the music to your heart.

i apologize for the long response.. but you asked what was my favorite ;)

aternity In reply to CreativeClara [2009-08-07 15:33:57 +0000 UTC]

Hahah, yes, well, we all have to be proud of the instruments we play or else it's not worth playing them at all. x)

Thank you about the bass cleff. And yes, I can play music for hours! Until my fingers hurt and feel like they wanna fall off.

No problem! I love reading long responeses. They really make me smile.

ahhh, this is very lovely work, nomi.

i love how the face is blurred out. it makes the whole thing seem like a dream and i think it's a neat effect. i also love that the violin is only an outline and not filled in with color and stuff -- that's a cool idea, to contrast it with the girl and the background.

i'm sure there are technical artistry terms that go with all that i just said, but i have no clue, so sorry.

great work. it really is a lovely piece of art.

aternity In reply to TheCoalMineCanary [2009-08-02 04:09:37 +0000 UTC]

Oh thank you so much! I was going for that dream-like effect~ <33
It's actually a viola but it could be a violin too. Though I suppose... there isn't much difference... I guess it's my violist pride talking again. cx

Oh yes you noticed! The violin/viola is drawn in because it's "unreal" and just adds to the whole surrealistic idea.

Perhaps... but if there are such terms, I don't know them.

Thanks again Ash.

TheCoalMineCanary In reply to aternity [2009-08-03 01:58:00 +0000 UTC]

duh, somewhere along this whole thing, i should have known it was a viola because i knew you played the viola. my bad! it is a very fine viola.

you definitely pulled off the dream effect, and quite nicely, too!

you are so welcome. sorry again about the violin/viola mix up. not only do i know nothing about the visual arts, i also know nothing about music.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aternity In reply to TheCoalMineCanary [2009-08-03 02:04:48 +0000 UTC]

Ah nononon worries. I shouldn't be so... gwah, over the violin/viola thing. xDD;; I guess it kinda happens after having the bass players make viola jokes all the time, you kinda become protective over the fact that violas are just as good as violins.. ;

But you know dance!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheCoalMineCanary In reply to aternity [2009-08-03 02:14:17 +0000 UTC]

no, no, no, i can understand you wanting to make sure the difference is known and stuff. that's kinda lame of the bass players, though...like i said, i know nothing about music, but i wouldn't know of anything that make violas inferior to violins. in fact, violas are probably extra cool, because it's harder to find a viola player than a violin or bass player, me thinks.

hehe, that i do! and that's actually why i understand why that it's important to have people know the difference and such. i am forever sick of people saying "wow! you're a great tap dancer!" when i'm actually a clogger...

aternity In reply to TheCoalMineCanary [2009-08-03 02:19:16 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, then we're on the same boat.
I will remember that so I'll never make the mistake of calling a tap dancer. x3

Yeah, I think all instruments are equal. And bassists aren't bad people... just those in our orchestra are bad...

TheCoalMineCanary In reply to aternity [2009-08-03 02:44:50 +0000 UTC]
