UPDATE:A visitor to AtheistsClub named mathewsleep brought up a good point and I thought I’d add my reply here, in the description of this deviation. He felt that the “Stupid Fish” deviation was inherently belittling.

My Reply:
I agree mathewsleep, we can certainly voice our beliefs without belittling others. Keep in mind that this is art though--and in this particular case the point was to voice the frustration of living in a society where a two thousand year old mythology still has so much sway. The “Stupid Fish” deviation is itself a case in point--the artist asked that it be posted anonymously for fear of reprisal.
I’m not sure if it’s a wise policy for the AtheistsClub to accept anonymous submissions--I’d certainly rather see people stand up publicly--but for now we’re willing to do so.
What’s your opinion?

I’d welcome more comments from people on this issue. I think it deals with a critical point that atheist artists face: the tension between public expression of personal feelings and the respect for one another we should all share.

i was looking for an agnostic club. and came across this. i think it's great. religion is such a ridiculous idea. being close minded to the idea we've evolved. being close minded to the idea that the earth is billions of years old. those are basic things. and they seem to be so threatening. "the bible doesn't give an age of the earth, so we can't be sure." it's stupid. the whole thing. 16% of the u.s. is non-religious. i think we need more meetings. and a bunch of posters with the stupid fish to post on telephone polls.

I don't think it's fair if you're calling religious people stupid, although I will agree that it has no place in the way laws and rights are created, since obviously not everyone shares those beliefs.

Alright, I have to comment I'm sorry. I've been reading all through your journal, page comments etc...Sometimes I can hold back on my opinions but that is rare. I'm not saying you people are bad people, but I think what you are promoting is wrong. You’re not promoting atheism your promoting hate. And why may I ask are you ONLY bashing Christianity? There are plenty of other religions out there to bash tons in fact, why don't you bash Satanism? If you are an atheist fine, but it hurts other people when you bash their religion. I am a Christian and I wouldn't bash atheists, that doesn't mean I have to agree with you, but it's very wrong to mock Christians based on what they believe. And that symbol is a very sacred symbol you are mocking. It just makes me angry and sad that Christians not any other religions is getting torn apart.
Also I have a suggestion for your club. Try to focus on YOUR beliefs and not on others.

We bash Christianity because most of us were Christians and we came to the conclusion after reading the Bible that religion is crazy. Did you know that it says in the Bible, I cant remember where, but it states that if your testicles are crushed or your penis has been cut off then you cant enter the house of the lord. Thats just one example out of hundreds of crazy stupid crap in there.

Because, having known the bible (btw, not 'known' in the biblical sense), I can't say I remember a section where Christ denounces the theology of the first Testament.

In the old testement a lot of people went to hell I guess, cuz they broke a lot of the rules (like the penis crushing one) Then Jesus came and took all of that sin away, therefore takine he pointless rules along with it.

I'm an atheist? When did I ever say that? This image is by the Atheists Club, but I am in no way affiliated with them. Don't assume someone's faith.

Would having been educated and familiar with many a passage of both Old and New testament be substantial? Just because I am not of the Christian faith (-that said, I am not Atheist, either.) does not mean I could not possibly have read the bible.

I am not a member of any religion, but I am not an atheist. An atheist is someone who denies the existence of any god or gods. I have beliefs, that include knowledge of a higher entity- it is not Christianity or anything similar, and it is not a religion, it is an independent belief.

Christianity does, in fact, come up more than any other single religion the AtheistsClub discusses. It is not singled out on purpose however. A vast majority of our members simply live in North America, England and Europe, where Christianity is the major religion. We have experienced more discrimination from Christians than any other religious group, so naturally that's where our attention goes.
The "stupid fish" is an expression of the frustration that non-theists feel specifically because so many Christian organizations do not allow us to focus on OUR beliefs instead of theirs. The AtheistsClub does not condone hate-speech. Speaking out against injustice is not hate however. True, there are more, and less sophisticated ways of speaking out, and the "stupid fish" certainly isn't appealing to a higher sense of rationality, but it does express a sincere feeling of frustration, anger and unrest that many non-believers share. Like all human institutions, Christianity is far from perfect. It has in the past, and continues to this day to harm many people. Using art to bring that harm to light is not hate. It brings the issue into a public forum where it can serve as a focal point for discussion.
The "stupid fish" has, for example, motivated you to ask sincere and important questions, which I have now had a chance to answer. Whether we agree with one anther or not, we've both had a chance to become more aware of issues that are important to us specifically because of that deviation.

Alright, I really appreciate not being cussed out or bashed. And just to make clear I think that "Christians" that have bashed your are not really Christians. I know, I've been ridiculed by supposed Christians, those kind are just intolerable and try and brag they know everything because they read the whole bible. So all I'm saying is there are really Christians out there that actually go by what the bible says to love everyone even if you don't agree with them. It REALLY bothers me that those kind of Christians do that kind of stuff because it gives the rest of a us a bad reputation, so I am sorry that you were ridiculed, that shouldn't happen to anyone. But just so you know try and give the rest of us a chance because there are good ones out there, and it pains me to see that they are hard to find. They are hard to find for me also, I HATE those show-offs and so did Jesus in the bible by the way.
I thank you for answering my comment and giving your point of view in an adult manner. Another idea, if you want to be angry, be angry at the Christians who lie, that's NOT what God wants, not in the least.

I dig the stupid fish. I know a lot of christians who aren't stupid, but never has any of them made me think that belief in christianity isn't a stupid trait (which even smart people have plenty of).
