Description THANK YOU FOR 1,000 VIEWS!! 10.31.05

When ~WannabeSpiderMan asked if I wanted to have a go at coloring in his gorgeous realistic drawing of Vash the Stampede , I nearly fainted with joy. So thank you, Dale, for letting me have this opportunity to flex my Photoshop muscles. I'm a newbie at certain things with Photoshop; I thought this would be a great learning experience as I've never colored in pencil art before.

Dale's own colored version [link] of his art really helped me a lot in my attempt at coloring this as I didn't have color references to things like the undersuit and metal arm.

I purposely made his hair and eyes that bright; I wanted him to have a hint of "anime/comic" feel. Just a hint. I chose to change the lips a bit; I had difficulty painting them and had to go a different route; I appreciate Dale allowing me artistic license in this regard. The duster simply refused to look aged and dusty for me like it did for Dale; it insisted on looking bright and shiny, so I'm presuming Vash has just had it dry cleaned. *sigh* I didn't intentionally make his face look older, but it ended up that way; I'm going with the thought that hey, he's over 100 years old, it's acceptable that his face shows a little bit of age, ne..? But I do hope I didn't mar his youthful attractiveness too much.

Since this was for practice and learning, all critiques and opinions are welcome and appreciated.

Wow... this looks reallyreally good!
I love your more realstic style. Pose and expression are great. The only thing is that the face does not really fit... I don#t know why... but he looks so... 'cute' ^^' He's got such a nice face, with babyblue eyes.... somehow I think that a real Wash would look different...

I'm glad you liked it, and I appreciate the remarks, but they really don't apply to me since all I did was the color; for critiques on the face, etc, you'll have to address the person who did the drawing, *WannabeSpiderMan .

You did a wonderful and incredible coloring job. I love the detail, but i must say, it looks like a realistic ... damn i forgot the name of Vash's Brother ><

Thanks hon! You're right, he does look a little more like Knives than Vash. Probably because Dale chose to make his hair shorter. But since the boys are twins, I guess it only makes sense he'd look just like his brother without some identifying mark, ne? ^__^

Oh, I wish I knew more about Vash! I've never seen the show so all I have to go on is the images I see all over dA. Though I have to say that this is the one i've enjoyed the most. I saw Dale submit this a while back and I remember having a huge smile on my face when I read your comment. I loved seeing (reading rather) you so happy!

Your colors look amazing on his pencils. I can't get over the little details like the bullet holes and the leathery sheen on his... what is that? Armor? Anyway, just wow. I LOVE seeing this fellow un-animed. It's really neat seeing someone draw an anime character realistically and do it right. You two make a great team.

No crits from me. In all honesty I think you got the lightsource just fine. It looks as though it's come from the front and just a tad to our left. The only thing that sticks out to me is how it shows on his jacket... although with all the folds it does make sense. It's gorgeous. You have nothin to worry about.

... WHAT THE? my comment just sent without me pushing any buttons! how weird! Let me continue...

... it did make me smile HUGELY. I am a big fan of Trigun; it's a very short series, only 26 episodes, I think. It's extremely original, very interesting concepts, and I love that Vash is a big ol' sweetie who could easily shoot the eyes off a flea but is so gentle and tender of heart he refuses to hurt anyone, although a lot of people have hurt him, physically and emotionally. He never became hard, like his crazy twin brother Knives. The animation is very good, and the humor and clever wit and tense situations made this anime very captivating for me. Adult Swim [link] is rerunning episodes; click on "schedule" to the bottom right of the Vash picture and it will tell you when it's playing. Sometimes it's too late for me to stay up (not even I am awake at 4am) and so I'll record it.

Thanks for the kind words about my light source I tried to follow Dale's pencil light source the best I could and imaginged the rest. Light sources are hard for me if I don't have a photo!

You're so welcome, Athena!
I hate it when comments decide they're goin to send themselves before you're done typing.

Trigun sounds so entertaining. I wish that I had cable! It's absolute torture not getting to watch Cartoon Network. I'm not even sure our provider carries it. It's definitely something i'll look into sitting down and watching once I have the chance to.

I wish I could take credit for the beautiful drawing, but it was done by * WannabeSpiderMan ; all I did was color it. I'm sure he'd love to hear your crits about the hair, the details, the nose / mouth, he always wants to hear helpful ideas to make his drawing better. So go visit his page and leave a note just like this and he'll appreciate it!!! ^___^ As for me, all I can take credit for is making Vash's coat too red *grin*

I brought the scan of the graphite drawing into Photoshop, made sure it was on a layer, set that layer to "multiply", then I made other layers underneath it and started coloring! Ta da!

You've deffinetly improved on the likeness of Vash from the original piece. Cheek bones are a bit too strong, he looks like David Bowie. But then again David Bowie does look a bit like Vash lol. At least he doesn't look like a twelve year old kid like the original piece did.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AthenaTT In reply to fizzfoam [2005-04-16 20:48:32 +0000 UTC]

Hey, thanks! It's actually color under pencil... take a pencil scan, bring it into Photoshop, put it on its own layer and make that layer say "multiply". Then make a layer underneath your pencil scan and start coloring. The top layer lets the bottom layer of color shine through (as long as you've told the top layer to "multiply").
