If you love me, let me go back to that bar in Tokyo
Where the demons from my past leave me in peace
(Ah, ah-ah, ah-ah, ah, ah-ah, ah-ah-ah)
I'll be animated every night
The grass'll be greener on the other side
And the vampires and wolves won't sink their teeth
(Ah, ah-ah, ah-ah, ah, ah-ah, ah-ah-ah)
I'm sick of dancing with the beast

Behind Bars
Draw or write about your character guarding captured cats. Are they comfortable with this task, and indifferent to the caged cats, or does it tug the heartstrings? What do they think of the eyes peering at them from behind bars?

The constant whispering, murmurs, and soft shuffling of paws all ceased as the familiar creak of a door echoed off the darkened walls of the cages. A singular set of paws padded past, earning a glare from each and every captured cat available.
Marlow's pawsteps felt heavier than stones the more he walked. The picture painted by all these cats, dimly lit by torches and the occasional glimpse of the outside world, the world which housed their true homes, was enough to break his heart. They weren't part of the fortunate ones who got to be housed outside. This area was usually reserved for more dangerous or eager to escape cats, or ones who just simply couldn't fit in the upper quarters properly.
Why him? Why was he put in charge of patrolling the cages? Checking for escapees? Marlow felt the gaze of each angry cat wishing his pelt would catch fire from the power of their hatred. Each depressed cat, wavering for the off chance he could offer refuge or an escort outside back to their family. Each scared cat, wondering if his claws would strike them at a moment's notice simply for his entertainment.
And each confused cat, who didn't understand why they were even in their cage to begin with.
The cheetah hybrid's paws stopped at a moment's notice, recognizing the familiar small brown cat curled up within the cage to his left. She had been a capture put under his name, and Marlow felt his heart sink deeper into his stomach like a stone.
He knew he had a job to do, but… a conversation might make him feel better.
“Pellie…?” He murmured, clinking his claws against the cage bars. As soon as he initiated contact with a confined cat, most others turned their heads. Though some especially nosey ears still listened in on the conversation that was about to take place.
The cat inside the cage shifted, turning her head. Marlow opened his mouth again: “Pellie…”
Before he could utter another word, recognition flashed within her gaze, and she darted up to the bars before him. “Marlow!” She breathed, smiling, before her excitement died down to the broiling anger, not too dissimilar to the feelings of others trapped. “Where were you?”
“Pellie, I-”
“Don't!” She cut him off quickly, raising her head defiantly. “I don't appreciate being treated this way! You put me here, didn't visit though you promised you would, and apparently, I'm not even allowed to leave!” The flabbergasted pampas cat stared daggers into him, and Marlow could only shrink under the amount of guilt her words put onto him. “It's not FAIR, Marlow! You know it's not! I know that you feel that way, too!”
She was right. He didn't think it fair. However, there was only so much he could do. He was born into this position. His mother was an elite, and he had an expectation to fulfill… Though maybe Pellie wouldn't understand that. He heard a rumor that a lot of these empire cats have parents and families outside of their empires. Abandoned, lost, orphaned. Perhaps Pellinore didn't get the privilege of having parents that have expectations. The love and support he had growing up was something he wished on everyone, even if it happened to come at the cost of feeling obligated to follow in their parents’ footsteps from the moment they were born.
Or maybe that was just him.
Memories of Xeixei, Paki and Temama coddling him and his littermates, promising that she'd make sure that, whatever path they take, that they'd be safe and happy flashed through his head.
Was he ever pressured into this position?
At any rate, he shook his head and cleared his mind, realizing that at the present moment, Pellie was looking at him expectantly, awaiting his response. His reason for neglecting her.
“Well?”
He clenched his jaw. Whether it was pushed onto him or not, this was the role he had to play. “Pellie… I'm a warden.” Marlow drew in a deep breath, raising his head and closing his eyes, not daring to meet her gaze or else he may stumble on his words. “As wardens, especially hunters… We will lie…”
“Marlow-”
“We will cheat. We will do anything in our power-”
“Marlow–”
“-in order to capture cats like you.”
“Marlow!” After multiple attempts to interrupt him, Pellie shouted, and Marlow heard his name echo along the cave, catching the attention of plenty of other cats that weren't already eavesdropping. “You say that but you're different!”
The words she said so recklessly stabbed through his chest, forcing Marlow's eyes open to meet her determined gaze. “H-How so? I lied to you, after all. I said you'd be able to visit the city. How am I different?”
“You came back to me, idiot!” Pellie puffed out her cheeks in frustration, in a way that, had the situation been ever so different, would make Marlow laugh and fill his heart with joy. “You're not like any of the other cats I've heard about in stories from others. You didn't hurt me! You didn't try to catch me like a wild goose! You didn't threaten me! It was me who came to you!”
“And I took advantage of you!!” Marlow shouted back, silencing any remaining murmurs within the crowd of eyes now watching him. Though when he met Pellie's gaze again, she was staring at him with soft pity.
Why did she look at him pitifully?
It was then that he felt something drip down to his paws. Upon looking down, he noticed that his vision was blurry, and an unfamiliar stinging touched his eyes, along with wetness falling down his cheeks.
He was crying. The urge to sob came up to his throat, though he managed to swallow it stubbornly, wiping any remaining tears from his face with a paw.
“Don't expect to see me here again, Pellie… I.. I have to go.”
And without turning back, he finished his patrol, though the gazes of those captured felt… different now. He sighed. He needed to get out of here and rinse off his face in a fountain before anyone else saw him.
Opening the door with his teeth, amongst the creak, he could hear a whisper of a finale to the whole situation… Though he wasn't sure if it was a part of his imagination or not.
It said:
“Goodbye, Marlow.”
