At least paper is biodegradeable, the eroded matter providing nutrients in the soil for more trees. I don't know how sanitation workers properly get rid of thrown plastic. I know it produces fumes when burned/melted, leaving them around can choke up nature, and it's all around cumbersome and annoying to throw away.
