Drawing ShadowsYesterday in the art class i was showing/ teaching the students how to work with shadows while drawing human body's . Here is an example drawing i did for the class to help explain .
The two drawings you see are me standing in front of the mirror while holding a flashlight from above and below. Each pose took me about 15-20 min to draw ( so 30-40 min for both )
This quick drawing was done using charcoal and fingers to smudge out the chalk. I normally sketch up some drawings for each class - its easier to explain the idea behind it to students that way.
This drawing and a lot of the drawings from my students are hanging on the walls in the schools hallway if anyone is interested in cheeking it out. Dino Tomic

might be a silly question, but did you use any guides, like a lamp on a posing doll, or even a life model? or is it just from memory and imagination?

I think he used some sort of refference [A photo perhaps or a live model]. Just saying.

He mentioned that he used himself as a model holding a torch first over his head then from below, to explain the shifting in the lighting and how it changes the shadows. From the shape of his hand, he probably used his phone to take a pic of himself in the mirror (he did also mention a mirror), and drew it from those reference photos.

have You ever used gray papers?
you should use it for this drawings, the gray of the paper enhances the effect of light and dark.

well the school did not have a budget to give out 500 + pages with black paper

It always amazes me how fast you are able to create your drawings like the one above, It just goes to show how much time and effort you've put into improving yourself over the years.
