Finally.......The Protoculture are largely ignored from Macross. Its good to see someone making drawings of what their vessels may have looked like. Love the look of this one!

The aesthetic is a mixture of Zentraedi and Meltrandi. Or rather I designed it to make it look like the Zentraedi and the Meltrandi took inspiration for the Protoculture aesthetic.

That makes a lot of sense seeing how both groups were created by them. It would only seems right that when their original ships and weapons were designed by the Protoculture, that design aesthetic would stay with them even after the PC's eventual extinction at their owns creations hands. I have always liked the organic shape and design of PC and Zentraedi ships.

And now it should come full circle. The humans should take aesthetic reference to Zentran and Meltran designs. Which they tried to do in Macross Plus and 7. I've always considered the Battle Class MacrossΒ having meltrandi pedigree in their design.Β

Very true, I also spotted some Meltrandi influences in the Battle Class. It is human nature to copy that which works well regardless of who designed it, even if you are only taking ideas from the best parts of a design. It was done with the North Hampton class Stealth ships. You can see the definite combining of Zent, Meltran and human aspects in its design even though the Zent built versions carry on the Zentraedi design aesthetic more than anything else. Even the Guantanamo class Stealth carriers have the organic Zent, Meltran aesthetics also.

My guess is, the humans choose the Meltrandi aesthetics because it's more agreeable to their taste. Rather than the menacingly organic Zentraedi.Β
In Robotech, they used the Zentraedi aesthetic. Well, they tried. I got disappointed when it was explained that it was only a camouflage external armor.

I was also highly disappointed in the fact it was only camouflage. To me the organic shape is more appealing. I find the cleaner mechanical shapes kinda boring especially with the shapes of the later human warships of the expeditionary forces (Robotech). They really had no character to me. I know with DYRL they took the organic aesthetic even further, even changing the interiors of the Zentraedi ships to showcase it (if you look at SDFM the Zent ships have a cross between the organic and mechanical, mainly the mechanical used on the interiors of their ships). But again DYRL was considered a movie within the Macross universe highlighting Space War 1 in Universe with the assumption these changes were made to make the Zent's look more menacing to the in universe movie goers. The motif stuck and was incorporated into the Zent designs seen in later Macross series.Β Β

In the epilogue of the book, "The End of The Circle". It talks about constructing/or preparing the SDF-04 for an exploration mission to the Andromeda Galaxy(or was it the Magellanic Clouds). I was curious to find out what the SDF-04 would look like. In the Robotech Universe, any ship of sufficient size can be an SDF. Neglecting the design pedigree.
If there will be another Macross series. I do hope they make a new breed of Marcoss design to appeal back to the old and mature fans. I mean too much flight deck is a waste of real estate. And it's just being lazy. Too bad western fans cannot critique the whole franchise. Because the Japanese have their own world from the very beginning.

From what I have heard through the Macross Forum I belong too, there is supposed to be another series coming out. Honestly at this point I would like to see a story based around the Ancient Protoculture this time. I wasn't a big fan of Delta, to me the Valkyrie design stagnated with the VF-31. The best thing to come out of that series was the introduction of an actual Protoculture vessel, unfortunately there isn't much info as of yet on the Sigur Valens. Sadly as far critiquing goes fans in the US have a hard time getting even the Macross series themselves in subbed form unless we order directly from Japan. Harmony Gold (who own the distribution rights for Macross under the title Robotech) will not allow anything titled Macross to be sold in stores in the US (they threaten any vendors with legal action under "copyright infringement" even thought they themselves didn't design any of the series they used). The Japanese will continue to make their designs by their own standards simply because the investors in the series are interested making toys and models that appeal to their local market also.

I've heard about that Harmony gold copyright thing some months ago on Youtube.Β
As for me, I haven't watched the whole series of Delta yet. Just snippets on Youtube. Don't even know what the whole premise of the story is.
"Sigur Valens?" That is so Terran a name. For a Protoculture vessel.Β Β
Well, If I can't have what I want from Marcoss. I'll make up one myself. And damned Shoji Kawamori. He doesn't even have a twitter account.

Delta has a good premise but the whole story just doesn't go anywhere. Supposedly there was supposed to be more revealed about the PC but in the end you are left with more questions than answers again. The name Sigur Valens is actually the name given to it by the antagonist in the story, the Windermerans. You can find it on most anime streaming sites. If you watch it don't be to disappointed, the story kind peters out after episode 10. I watched the whole series since I started it and decided to give it a chance. If it wasn't Macross I would have probably never finished it.
LOL I have never checked to see if Kawamori had a twitter but I can't say much since I don't have one myself....LOL. I know the story he wanted to do for Delta originally was about air racing in Valkyries.....but of the course the toy and music companies won out and insisted on the whole love triangle thing again.Β Kawamori has stated he is tired of doing the whole love triangle thing and wanted to move away from it. I honestly believe they will never give us any real story including the PC. Which is a shame since since there are so many things a lot of us would like to learn more about them.....Β

I keep missing the local Comic Con and Toy Conventions here ever since I left Facebook. You usually get some "bootleg animes" there, and them some. But I think i can manage without seeing the whole of Macross Delta. I think if they(the japanese) make one about the Protoculture, with present anime character designs trend. They might just look like some stereotypical game character design from a Final Fantasy clone game. Very stale. I even ranted about it on twitter. I said I don't want anymore "Sailormoon/Macross hybrid" stuff. I want a serious story next time. Unfortunately it was just a twitter fan account. So no japanese got the message.
Back in the day I thought he had a facebook account. I was just a fan account. I just read(the time I was typing this) that Shoji Kawamori was a special guest at a local Comicon LAST AUGUST. My unofficial mentor was here in my city. And I never knew. I design Macross class ships and some variable fighters, and I don't even get to meet him. Although actually, it wasΒ Kazutaka Miyatake who design the SDF-01 Macross(so He should be really my "unofficial mentor")

Well now that a court ruling came down stating that Harmony Gold only owns distribution rights to Macross in the US and that Tatsonoku owns the actual copyright to it we may finally see some actual Macross material released in the US in a few yrs (once HG's current distribution rights run out in 2020). Unfortunately I think you are right about the potential of any character design for a series based around the PC. The anime industry in Japan is directly linked to the toy/model manufacturing industry in Japan, so they will design what sells for them, not what makes a good story.
I know a lot of movies here in the US, mainly sci fi owe a lot to Kawamori and several other animators from Japan. Sadly A LOT of Americans have no idea that quite a few scenes in movies they like were based on scenes out of animes and Manga. I am not sure if he has ever been a guest at any of the US Comic con's but if he was he would be surprised probably at the number of people that would show just to see him. In an interview he stated he was quite saddened by the fact that none of the Macross series outside of Macross Plus have ever been distributed in the US. He knows there is a big if not huge fan base here also.
