Overview:
The United Nations Defense Forces (UNDF) is the military force of the United Earth Government, formed shortly after the official inauguration of the UEG in January 1st, 2001 A.D., about a year into the Unification Wars. Compared to the former United Nations Peacekeeping Forces, the UNDF was given far more power, allowing the United Earth Government to respond to regional conflicts and natural disasters far more efficiently.
By the mid-2000s, the UNDF operated in the public eye as a peacekeeping force that was regularly deployed to regional conflicts. In reality, their primary mission was to serve as the spearhead of the United Earth Government's planetary defense program in preparation for alien warfare. Publicly, the UNDF mostly saw action as a peacekeeping force in the few remaining regional conflicts and, more importantly, they fought frequent battles against the armed forces of the Anti-Unification League throughout the Unification Wars from 2001 to 2007. Meanwhile, through the development of the alien technology found aboard the crashed wreck of the SDF-1, dubbed "Robotechnology", experimental new weapons are created, such as the Veritechs, the Destroids, and other space-faring weapon platforms. Many of these Robotech weapons would be utilized by the UNDF in covert missions against Anti-UEG forces during the later years of the Unification Wars. In January 2007, the Unification Wars ended in UEG victory, though many Anti-Unification League remnant groups and sympathizers remained to disrupt the peace. Two years later, the UNDF was involved in the subsequent First Robotech War (2009-2010), defending Earth from a hostile extraterrestrial race called the Zentraedi and Meltrandi.
At the time of the Zentraedi invasion, the UNDF was made up of five main branches: the UN Army, the UN Navy, the UN Air Force, the UN Spacy, and the UN Marine Corps. Its assets included military bases on Earth, Luna, and Mars, along with several relay stations and minor outposts that were scattered across the Outer Solar System. The United Earth Eielson Aerospace Warfare Headquarters, a massive military complex located near Anchorage, Alaska, served as the general headquarters of the United Nations Defense Forces until its destruction during the Rain of Death. The UNDF also possessed squadrons of Veritechs and other mecha, several capital ships in orbit, and the repaired SDF-1 Macross on Macross Island, the flagship of its elite division, the Robotech Defense Force.
Branches and Subdivisions:
UN Army - (United Nations Army): The UN Army is the largest branch of the United Nations Defense Forces when compared to the other branches of the UNDF, with several billion personnel active at any time. Even during peace, its generals and other commanding officers responsible for a far greater percentage of the national defense budget and human lives than the more prestigious UN Spacy.
The official mission of the UN Army is to provide the the majority of logistical support and reserve soldiers who fight in ground campaigns. The Army's collateral functions are defined as:
- Conducting civil works that have strategic application, including projects for improvement of navigation and follow-on terraforming.
- Development of doctrine, procedures and equipment that are of common interest to the Air Force and Marine Corps.
- Organization and training of civil defense units.
- Providing forces for joint aerospace and naval operations, in accordance with UNDF doctrine.
Overall, the UN Army is tasked with the defense of the Solar System and United Earth Government colony worlds, and the long-term occupation of enemy territory. As such, it is tasked with training, organizing, equipping and maintaining amphibious, land, and airborne forces capable of carrying out this mission. Despite being a primarily military force, the Army has additional peacetime roles of providing engineers, technicians, builders, and designers on civil and public works projects and the support of other UNDF deployments.
UN Navy - (United Nations Navy): The UN Navy is the smallest branch of the United Nations Defense Forces. The Navy regularly maintains a largely automated armada of high-tech megacarriers and ballistic missile submarines that continuously circle the globe in anticipation of orbital bombardment.
UN Air Force - (United Nations Air Force): The UN Air Force is the aerospace warfare service branch of the United Nations Defense Forces responsible for atmospheric operations and orbital defense. The Air Force maintains numerous orbital defense satellites, automated drone fleets, and manned aerospace interceptors to defend human space, often working closely with the UN Spacy, Navy, and Army.
The official mission of the UN Air Force is to maintain aerospace superiority over the worlds of the United Earth Government, as well as conduct space control operations. In this capacity, the Air Force is responsible for organizing, training, and equipping air and space forces to interdict and destroy enemy attacks before and after they enter a world's orbit. The Air Force's collateral functions include:
- Deployment and maintenance UNDF unmanned defense satellites and orbital defense platforms.
- Monitoring and regulating military and civilian orbital activities.
- Development of doctrine, procedures, and equipment that are of common interest to the Army, Navy, and Spacy.
- Furnishing launch and space support for the Army and Spacy.
Other duties of the UN Air Force include maintaining security forces for airbase and spaceport defense. The Air Force also provides search and rescue support.
UN Spacy - (United Nations Space Command): The UN Spacy modelled itself after the Navy and draws in members from the UN Army, the UN Navy, and the UN Air Force, with naval officers being the most numerous. Notable members of UN Spacy such as Fleet Admiral Donald Hayes and Captain Henry J. Gloval were former naval officers.
The Spacy is the branch of the Defense Forces responsible for space warfare and operations. Its roles include space warfare, orbital bombardment, the deployment of atmospheric and space fighters, and the delivery of UN Marines into combat.
The UN Spacy is responsible for destroying and suppressing enemy space combatants, especially those attempting to attack UEG commercial and terrestrial holdings. The Navy's collateral functions include:
- Interstellar transportation of UNDF assets.
- Development of doctrine, procedures and equipment that are of common interest to the UN Air Force and Marine Corps.
- Providing forces for joint aerospace and terrestrial operations, in accordance with UNDF doctrine.
- Coordination with UEG civil agencies for the establishment and maintenance of naval depots and orbital yards.
- Establishment of emergency military government in designated crisis areas.
UN Marine Corps - (United Nations Marine Corps): The UN Marine Corps is the branch of the UNDF responsible for conducting land-based expeditionary amphibious and airborne combat operations, using the mobility provided by the UN Navy and UN Spacy to rapidly deliver forces. Marines are also charged with the defense of Navy vessels and installations from hostile forces.
RDF - (Robotech Defense Force): The Robotech Defense Force was an elite division of UNDF special forces separate from the five main branches formed by the United Earth Government in preparation of intergalactic war, centered around the SDF-1 Macross in Macross Island. Officially, the RDF is a quick response force to regional conflicts and natural disasters during the Unification Wars. However, its true purpose is to serve as the United Earth Government's vanguard force--its first and last line of defense in the face of a large-scale alien invasion. After the First Robotech War and the Rain of Death, the RDF acted as the main vanguard of reconstruction efforts and the de facto military police in response to the rise of Malcontent Zentraedi and rogue nations that seceded from the UEG. By the early 2020s, most of the RDF was transferred to create the Robotech Expeditionary Forces, leaving the few remaining RDF assets left behind on Earth to be absorbed under the command structure of the Army of the Southern Cross.
ASC - (Army of the Southern Cross): The Army of the Southern Cross, also known as the Southern Cross Army, is an autonomous global military force; the successor to the Robotech Defense Force for the protection of the Earth and the control of Robotechnology.
GMP - (Global Military Police): Formed from the elite ranks of the now-defunct UN Military Police, the Global Military Police is a special task force established during the post-First Robotech War reconstruction era to act as the de facto intelligence and internal security organization for the United Earth Government (despite the fact that they are answerable directly to the Supreme Commander of the United Nations Defense Forces and not a civilian government officer).
REF - (Robotech Expeditionary Forces): The Robotech Expeditionary Forces is the main interstellar warfare branch of the United Nations Defense Forces, initially formed as part of the "Pioneer Mission" which oversaw plans to travel to the respective homeworlds of the Robotech Masters and the Invid Regency, Tirol and Optera, in order to make sure that Earth wouldn't be caught in the chaos of another Robotech War. Following the long and tedious Sentinels Campaign and the subsequent REF Civil War, the Robotech Expeditionary Forces currently serves as the main space defense/enforcement organization for the space colonies of the United Earth Government, dealing with localized and/or hostile alien threats.
