Description Inspired by Samurai Jack and the incredible work of Scott Wills.

The three-eyed exotic alien dancer from the second episode: "The Samurai Called Jack".

I always love the bit where she parts her hair for the first time and you see the third eye as a surprise. The pacing in that scene is great.

This is fantastic! I love that episode with the dogs and stuff. And she's dancing in the background in reverse too.

Thank you so much, I was a bit lazy with the silhouette, I had intended to draw another character dancing (maybe with three legs haha) but I was tired and running out of steam.

The overall effect works out nicely though eh?

You start with lines, then you color the lines the same color.... (Or hide the layer they're on).

Hmm intresting combo the flat style of the characters painting, against the backround. And I gotta say I really love the work you put in with the colours and how they work together. But mostly I really like the touch of the little mirrored sillouette of her.

AtomicTiki In reply to InnocentTazlet [2009-12-18 13:48:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much.

It's weird, I've been spending a lot of time really looking at the painted backgrounds and noticing all the suggested detail. I've come to the conclusion that the visual richness a lot of people see in Samurai Jack is due to the stunning backgrounds. Nearly all the foreground characters are extremely simplified into that flat illustration style, so much mood and emotion is defined by the colours and layouts in the backgrounds, I think that's why most episodes seem to get a "flavour".

Bill Wray and Scott Wills are both masters of deconstruction and colour use, if I can get even just a taste of what they do I'm happy..

Mauser712 In reply to AtomicTiki [2009-12-19 05:53:10 +0000 UTC]

Good observation! In a way, because of the simplification and style Jack could even have been a Flash animated show, except as done by REAL Animators.

It would be interesting to find out how it was made. Maybe CAPS or something? Wasn't it done at Turner's animation studio?

AtomicTiki In reply to Mauser712 [2009-12-23 08:12:52 +0000 UTC]

From what I gather they keyframe stuff was done in the US and the tween stuff was done in India.

Mauser712 In reply to AtomicTiki [2009-12-23 08:44:13 +0000 UTC]

Huh, you don't hear much about animation in India.

Somewhere I've got a CD-Rom they passed out at ComiCon before the show premiered. I never did look at it (Only had a Mac at the time). Wonder if it's worth anything.

I don't get that either.

One of my favourite shows was canned from Teletoon a little while back because it blended video with animation and in those days Teletoon said programming had to be more than 90% animated content (or whatever) now they show some crap teeny-bopper live action crap.

What the heck!

Mauser712 In reply to batosithepk [2009-12-19 05:51:34 +0000 UTC]

And those aren't even cartoons. It's like wrestling on SciFi, er, syfy, which barely shows sci-fi any more.

batosithepk In reply to Mauser712 [2009-12-19 06:13:37 +0000 UTC]

to be fair scifi oops i mean syfy has always been about shows and movies that are just outside the realm of possiblity so the poor acting and problematic history it could qualify as a weekly b movie rofl

Mauser712 In reply to batosithepk [2009-12-19 06:31:03 +0000 UTC]

If you see interviews with Bonnie Hammar (sp?) who is the network exec who took over "syfy" she's not interested in her core demographic, she's trying to get more women, and according to her, Women like the soft stuff like all the Psychic/Ghost/Supernatural occult crap.

Clearly something similar has happened to Cartoon Network.

yes they call it cn so people will forget that that it stands for "cartoon" network soon kids will be thinking of its childrens network or something and how can they put this stuff on when toonami was its awesome robot alien inport block and it went out with a whisper from Tom

When new executives take over a network, it's like a lion taking over a pride. He kills all the cubs of the previous lion. That's why Comedy Central killed BattleBots. They nuked everything except their cash cow, South Park. So the new guys at CN want to be Nickelodeon....

Hahah, I remember this scene quite well, and the fact that she was the one who tipped Aku off to the presence of 'Jack.' You drew her with much allure, my friend, and the colors of the room go well with the setting of a club scene.

Keep up the goodness.
