Description Aha first entry into my own JAM (more info here ).

Silica is from an animated film from the mid-80s called "Starchaser". The movie plot is basically Star Wars, I would say that it's on par with Transformers: The Movie. But then I have a soft spot for this movie so what do I know?

Anyway, I hope you like!

Despite the lack of respect she got, Silica was my favourite character.

Oh wow, this is an oldie

I'd draw her more but I upset a fellow artist a while back ( Chronorin ) with some dumb comments and I've been a little gun shy ever since

augh, I still love this movie so much, hard to believe it will be 30 years old next year

Absolutely! It was one of those films I saw on VHS when I was a kid and it really stuck with me, for YEARS I couldn't remember the name, then it came to me one day and I had to buy the DVD which was just out at the time.

It was even better than I had remembered!

I didn't see the movie, but saw Nostalgia Critic talk about it. I liked the part where they operated on her ass.

LOL

I'm tellin' ya, see it if you can, it's one of those flicks that will surprise you even if it is a bit Star Wars-y

Have you ever uploaded it before.
I'm sure I remembetr seeing it on a (mostly) fruitless hunt for Starchaser art.

I've only posted the Jam piece here, the full version I have on one other site/forum that I belong to, but otherwise I haven't posted it elsewhere.

It would interest me if it was posted elsewhere though.

I actually have 'The Legend of Orin' on VHS (I'm almost afraid to watch it, the poor thing is so old). And yes, it's such a Star Wars rip off its insane, yet fun for all that.

And I think the creators thought "Hey, if George Lucas can make a robot gay, we can make ours a saucy minx..."

AtomicTiki In reply to adronbuske [2008-05-03 23:30:32 +0000 UTC]

My thoughts pretty much exactly.

I ended up buying it on DVD when it was released. It was one of those movies that I kinda half-remembered and I was genuinely surprised to find out that it was a lot better than I remembered it.

Worth a second viewing if you can find it on DVD.

I had no idea they'd re-released it. I might have to hunt that down.

Now if I could just find Vytor: The Starfire Champion...

(guaranteed to be awesomely bad)

I watched this film as a kid and loved it! I watched it again the other week and was pocking at how it's just not a kids' film at all, with all the sexual innuendo and violence!
Needless to say I was loving it.

Also, the CG ships are fantastic. I hate CG nowadays, but the purity of 80s CG, as seen in TRON, had something incredibly cool about it...

I was surprised to learn that it was the first feature length 3D animated film (as in 3D glasses). Pretty crazy eh?

You really gotta check out the full version of this picture (if you haven't yet).

Oddly, that is one of the few animated movies that I haven't seen. I remember seeing it at the rental store and always meaning to pick it up but I never did. I wonder if they have it in town somewhere? Need to go look.

Anyway, great pic. I really like how she looks.

Thanks man, I'm sure you've seen the full version too by now (which has just a little bit better shading). As I said to another deviant I really enjoy Starchaser but I know it's not everyone's cup of tea. Go in with low expectations and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I tend to watch movies hoping to see one cool thing. If there is more than that I'm good. If there's something cool in that movie, I will love it.

Yes I did. I like the one with the background better.

Magnificent work! I hope to work on my idea for one later this morning or this afternoon.

That's such an awesome movie! I think they have that out on DVD, but I might be the only one to own an actual copy of the movie!

AtomicTiki In reply to BalloonPrincess [2008-04-05 14:12:39 +0000 UTC]

I have a copy buried somewhere in the Tiki-vault, the history for me started in 1987 when it hit video release. Dad rented it for us (it was a Friday night tradition to rent a movie) and he knew to look for one of two things; sci-fi, animated. We then as a family sat down and watched it. To see the movie through the eyes of an adult there are a few things that stand out in this film (to me), but as a child it was iconic.

It took me more than a decade to find out what it was called again and then there was trying to get MGM (I think) into putting it on a DVD release. Which they did and is one of the MANY reasons why MGM rocks.

Much like Star Wars the most interesting character was the space-rogue (mostly because of his metamorphosis during the story). Dag is also the Galaxy's biggest bad-ass. He steals from the rich and gives to himself. He had zero respect for robots (nice tip of the hat to Ice Pirates when he has the bodyguard robots), shady dealings, space-hookers, the dude had it goin' on. Then Orim shows up and turns his world upside down.

Great stuff!

This cartoon wouldn't work in the world of PC nowadays ... poor Han Solo. He got fucked too.

AtomicTiki In reply to BalloonPrincess [2008-04-05 16:37:12 +0000 UTC]

It was the type of character that was completely MISSING and completely REQUIRED for the prequel Star Wars movies. (I'm not bitter... much)

BalloonPrincess In reply to AtomicTiki [2008-04-05 20:25:11 +0000 UTC]

Definitely ... Lucus is too driven to follow the rules of PC than to tell a story that should be done the right way.

That's for sure, one of the things that made the original Star Wars movies stand out was the shades of grey you got from characters like Han and Lando.

Exactly, the bad guys in Sailor Moon were tougher, meaner and way more perverse than the Trade Federation ever was (buncha robot using lame-Os).

I think that the only thing going for the first three movies of Star Wars was their look ...

And even that, I miss the old models from the original films, they looked much more realistic.

Indeed ... special effects don't always make things better. You ought to hear the screaming of my buddy about the Princess's ship in the first movie. "That bullshit shine would be so ruined in real outer space!"
