I haven't used the pen tool like this for AGES.

Part of a commission work.

Excellent work. Out of curiosity, do you sketch on paper and scan them in or are you sketching directly from Photoshop?

Y'know I used to use paper all the time but I find myself using Photoshop to do the roughs as well now. Paper is faster, but it has no "undo" button lol

With something like this I just did a quick thumbnail to get the pose (which was a bitch I can tell you, I hate "flat" character designs because it makes some poses very difficult to visualize but) once I had that I just started going to town with the pen tool, and the rest is history.

I threw in a background too to finish the piece, though I don't usually give that away for free. I actually had to find a reference of what her bedroom looked like, surprisingly hard.

The worst part was the commissioner didn't say one nice word about it, I sent 'em the pic and they pointed out things they didn't like...

That really grinds my gears but what can you do.

I kinda figured you were sketching on the PC lately. I've been trying it as well by drawing a thumbnail image with a resolution set to 100. I agree that it does make things more difficult and takes longer but I like being able to resize the image when I draw it too big to fit the page. I got so annoyed that I've been doing it all on PC. Of course, there is the down side that my work looks like shit now.

I can see why you would be irritated about the commissioner not saying anything nice after you've done all that work. I think it looks awesome myself. By the way, did you send the commissioner a rough sketch to them for approval before coloring it? That way there, they can tell you what they want changed before you invest all that time in coloring.

Ooh yeah, I love being able to change the canvas size. I usually sketch at a higher resolution for commissions, my default is 8 1/2" x 11 1/2" at 300 dpi. Very rarely will I post something that big, usually I change the dimensions first.

Sketching on the PC gets a lot easier with practice I can tell you! Inking and jazz like that is still tedious as all hell, I'd love to get better at inking with actual ink but I can't "zoom" the paper lol

Well they said they wanted it to match the show as best as possible and they gave me refs for colour and stuff so I figured it was a slam dunk, but this particular person always finds something to complain about though. It takes the joy out of it...

I guess they like my work because they're always first in line with $$ for commissions but still...

You know, the comic artist Phil Notto also draws entirely on the PC. I know I will probably never be as good as him but I know it can be done... which gives me hope.

For inking Notto uses Manga Studio Ex. I've tried it and it works pretty good. It also tries to straighten out your lines and cleans them up automatically. I'm going to start messing around with it some more soon. I like the organic feel to it versus using the Pen Tool. Except when drawing KP and Danny Phantom styled characters which just require it.

I've been forcing myself to get away from the pen tool for a bit, I mean yeah for some stuff like this commission it makes things a bit easier (less cleanup later, more work up front), though I will say that this work has about 20% hand drawn stuff hidden in there (little bits that no one really looks at but I do lol)

If you want to surprise yourself get the pencil out and draw a rough DP character on paper then go over them with a broad/chisel nib pen. I find it easier to draw DP stuff on paper (or at least faster) however it tends not to scale well when I scan it, so the computer wins for now.

GStevensArt In reply to AtomicTiki [2012-03-23 20:15:38 +0000 UTC]

I can't draw on paper anymore. My biggest hurdle is that I always draw oversize and never have enough room on the paper to finish my work. At least I can scale it down by drawing in Photoshop. Plus having a Cintiq helps as it feels like drawing naturally.

I started doing thumbnail sketches to try to figure that out, of course on the computer I can just resize the canvas haha

I felt quite relaxed when I did this and focused more on the overall shapes than the details, I think that helped.

Dude this is a great copy but it's not your design, it's Stephen Silver's~ it'd be better if you had drawn Sam in your own style~

Please take some time and look through my original works before making a comment like this.

TinaNxoxo In reply to AtomicTiki [2011-11-23 04:04:46 +0000 UTC]

I'm not saying you stole someone's art. It's just the design. It's someone else' design, that's all~ that Sam is exactly like the one in the cartoon, which was originally designed by Stephen Silver. This is only view from a character design artist. If you only drew this for fun, then it's okay~ otherwise this is a copy of Sam in a different position, not your original work. You drew, but you did not think of it.

AtomicTiki In reply to TinaNxoxo [2011-11-23 04:35:56 +0000 UTC]

Sorry, I didn't mean to go all crazy there but it did take some effort to make this happen, the character design isn't original but the pose certainly was (and very tricky to implement given the limited design).

From time to time I do this to learn from someone else's design, or in this case to fulfill a commission.

I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say.

TinaNxoxo In reply to AtomicTiki [2011-11-23 04:42:54 +0000 UTC]

that's why i said it was okay geez dude =.=
I did not call u art thief =.=
and I have met Stephen Silver and had a conversation with him. he's one of my most respected character designers in the animation industry and he told me about there are a lot of young artists using his designs in their portfolios and galleries~ and asked us if we could watch out for him rofl.
but again, it's cool, as long as you don't use it for profits or on your professional portfolio. learning is good. I am learning a lot from Ernie Gilbert, current character designer from fairly oddparents. I liked your gallery since it was moving more toward animation, not the typical anime or portraits like most artworks on deviantart are.
but it's cool~ it's a perfect picture of Sam~ I wish to see your own version of Sam and Kim Possible some day~

Again sorry, I didn't mean to go off on you really, it just caught me off guard at a particularly bad moment.

When I'm asked to make a character look exactly like they do in the show I work my hardest to make that happen for them, this isn't something drawn by Stephen or his crew, this is something drawn by me from the ground up.

I've been a fan of his since Clerks the Animated series, so it's a bit of an extra treat to draw something that emulates his style.

I appreciate the comments...

First, don't put ever words into my mouth. I never interpreted what you said as "art theft". That's something you said, not me.

Are we clear on that?

Anyway, I really shouldn't have to explain this to you but I wanted to match the style, end of story. I worked my ass off to make that happen, which takes quite a lot longer than drawing in my own style.

If you want to see artwork in my style I'll direct you to my gallery where you can see a wide variety of works in various styles I've done over the last 5 years.

Have a Nice Day
