Description
Sam plays a vital role within Captivity, both as a human and eventually as a mer. Starting out, she's simply a budding college student, looking to get out of the shadow of her parents and off on her own. During a visiting tour of her uncle's new aquarium, she stumbles upon the phantom mer, hidden within the backroom and through growing curiosity, takes up residence at the nearby college to further understand the unique creature she has met, and eventually build a friendship with him.Through a number of miscommunications and manipulative hands, Sam finds herself the centerpiece of a tragic and ironic set of circumstances. Among them the result of her painful transformation into one of the world's most secreted creatures.

when i was a 5 and younger, the only thing i would draw was mermaids, i haven't drawn a mermaid in years because i didn't like them, but that was cuz the only mermaids i knew were the crappy cartoon mermaids.. but after seeing your art, i started my first mermaid drawing in 9 years.

Im glad I could inspire you to draw. In truth I am not a fan of the crappy cartoon mermaids. Which was why I decided to pull them back to their origins and redesign them all together as the species Mer.

It looks like a merman instead of a mermaid, how can you tell she's a she?

Female mers usually have darker colors and fins. Males are also usually much larger in comparison.

Mhm. My friend actually came up with her overall design. She's based off of a Betta fish, mainly for the flowing fins, etc. Though for most of the other mers I tend to just use a basic anatomy, maybe look up a few breeds of fish that have interesting designs. But for the most part I tend to keep them as their own separate species, not having fish tails of a said existing breed...

Well, given that she's initially human, she has more of a dolphin style swim pattern. Given the shape of her spine being mammalian rather than fish.

I had to reference a few fish photos with scale closeups to get a decent concept. Thr shibe was several hours of me fussing with lighting layers

Well, I admit, it is the cleverest form ofΒ censorship I ever saw, I will use the way you made the scales show covering her skin, the scales are too cool to me to even try.
TheΒ manipulative hands are Vlad, Vlad, Vlad and GIW? Vlad is the one with the mostΒ manipulative hand other when Clockwork ( Clockwork is the only one with a good manipulative way around)...Β I don't doubt Vlad is the reason everyone's sad in any way, he always had a way to screw up everything be it his plans or the life around him. I wonder that will happens if Danny, Sam and Juno meet theΒ shoal, if they will ever meet?

But yes, that was the purpose of it, as well as giving the females a more protective, armored guard against aggressive males and to defend their offspring.
And yes, Vlad does play a heavy part in this story as far as manipulative hands go. As for the shoal, we'll just wait and see.

Sam is the most beautiful mer I ever saw, even if she looks sad... Can I use the way you make the way the scales you made on the shoulders and theΒ torso? (Gosh my English sucks right now...)
I wanted to draw a Sam with scales, with snake hair and a snake tail, but the way the scales show up should be like yours. I could write the scale idea was your idea and put a link about Mer Sam, I just wanted to write a story of Sam like that because of your drawing and the song 'Heather Dale's Medusa' it reminds me a little of Sam... And I can't think of making the scales... I can't explain the details of Sam so I should draw her, but I sucks at drawing in the computer and Notebook too and my mouse is broken too. Can't click the left one and the right one don't always work right. I wish I could draw like you, you have talent.

Mer's are an odd mix. Kind of like our platypus friend. They have a few characteristics of both.Β Different breeds carry young differently. (I intend on posting a worldwise species ref soon. 
As for TA, it's currently on hiatus sadly. I wish to stay motivated to finish writing captivity before I go back to it. It has a few open ends I haven't sorted out, plus I might need to redraw the pages since my art style has changed over the years.

She does eventually change back, though the switching forms isn't something she can voluntarily control.

It is a painful process for her, considering it's completely mutating her whole biology. For Juno it's already a part of who he is, it just requires a trigger.

Sadly, Danny is at the heart of those tragic circumstances.... and forgiveness is a difficult thing to give when a wall of madness blocks one's path

Wow, she's really beautiful. Β Usually when I see a picture of mermaids, they often come out as women similar to Ariel or girls with with gigantic breasts that wear tiny sea shells. You on the other hand have captivated (XD No pun intended) the real beauty of the creatures. Kudos for you. This is awesome. Β
