Description
There is nothing truly pure. Name anything and Iβll disprove itβs purity. Because nothing is pure, there can be no pure, figuratively speaking, black or white. There can only be grey. There is nothing that is purely good or bad. There is nothing truly chaotic or ordered. There is a little bit of good in every evil act and a bit of evil in every good one. There is always a bit of the opposite in everything. For some examples, read on. If a child is told that if it is good, they will receive a reward, then the good behavior is tainted with want or greed. The parent, in offering this, teaches the child to behave, but also teaches the child to want more. To show the opposite, a man kills another man, who he hates. This is an evil act, for we all know that murder is wrong. But it makes him feel better, even if only for a moment. Later, sending the man to prison would be considered a bad thing to the man. However, he receives free food, clothing and shelter. This is a good thing. The law would be teaching him that it is bad to murder, while also teaching him that he will be rewarded for the act.
Thus there is no pure thing or act. There is no good, no evil, only varying degrees of neutral. There is no black, no white, only grey.

Okay, I'm gonna come out and say it right now, this is the Budhist belief, in a nut shell basically, it's all about balance and how with every good there is bad and vise versa, and the concept of how everything has an opposite. and nothing nor good or bad can exist absolutely. You can't deny me this J, this is the belief I like to believe in, and I've done some research. This is the Budhist belief, you are thinking like a budhist.

Yeah... I just apply it to everything. For instance, there is a bit of hate in love. I really understand that one. I'm living it.

you could also say that everything is pure. pure grey and the tone of the grey is the sure there is influence by black and white but in a balance so the act, feeling or thought will only be defined in the tone of gray a pure mixture of black and white
aah what the heel I think to much
great stuff it makes me think!

Yes, but there is no pure grey either. For all things are a balance of unbalance. O_o All things are either more black or white. There is no pure neutral act either.

Yes, doing drugs is a good example of Grey. For the few seconds of pleasure, you pay for it with long-term damage. Good and bad.

that may be true but i am not one of those people... those are like the people in my story who do it too much... i mean that if you smoke it every so often and just hang out with your friends... the worst thing i can think of could be raiding your fridge of your food!... but whatever you have your opinion and i have mine and we are both entitled to it... but yes there are some people who fuck over their lives with smoking... but that's when they over use pot and use it as a gateway to larger drugs like E... thats how it started for one of my friends... and now he is not among us......
sorry about the rant... im done for now.....

While you have a point you seem to go back on yourself. You start by stating that there is no black nor white, simply grey. This can be considered to express the idea that there is no 'good' nor 'evil', simply there is to be. This would allow the aspect of 'good' or 'evil' to be left up to one's own personal feelings, not a social medium or divine ruling. Your point is clear, but the examples go against it by using the aspects of sins and morality, along with postive and negative reinforcement. Just my thoughts as well.

Thanks for the input, you are right. The ideas that I express are based on one's own ideas of good and evil, or black and white. I would appreciate any ideas of other examples to use, I am but a fledgling philosopher.

Rahmiel In reply to attackbeaver [2006-11-20 18:21:37 +0000 UTC]
It's rather difficult to think of an example to fully express the idea of 'grey' beyond the point that there is no good nor evil. Anytime you attempt to come up with something, it almost automatically comes under the review of either your personal views or others on the matter. Some vague, yet I think applicable, examples would be: sex, hunting, murder, or even the airy concept of chaos. Sex, for example, may be viewed by some as something good, pleasurable, enjoyable, while others view it as bad, sinful, disgusting, or animalistic. In truth it's nothing more than reproduction, a function which all living organisms have to attempt in continuing the length of their species. Another is chaos, which could be described as destruction or death, or something close to that sort. Usually these ideas are considered to be bad or evil or something along those lines, but without those, without chaos, change, evolution, whatever you want to call it or think of it, cannot happen. Life would become stagnant and everything would become nothing in time.
... Err.. I think I've rambled a bit much. Sorry for tossing so much out there, don't want to steal the show. Regardless, you have the idea right!

Thanks, and don't feel bad for the speech. I appreciate the feedback. The entire idea is based on one's personal views, in the case of the examples, mine.
