Description
Dr. C.A. Rotwang is the villain in Fritz Lang's metropolis. An archetypal mad scientist, Rotwang has been the rival of the Governor of Metropolis, Fredersen for years including in romance where he lost and his love Hel eventually died. Rotwang decided to create an android who would be the rebirth of Hel. His plans are interrupted by Fredersen ordering him to use the robot to impersonate Maria, an social equality activist. Under the guise of following orders Rotwang turns the robot into a violent revolutionary with the aim of destroying the city for his revenge. It's never stated whether he just wants destruction or if he would have had his robot make him ruler of Metropolis. I would argue his plan was simply destruction for the sake of watching Fredersen and his city burn to the ground.

Sean Bean is easily one of my favorite actors and has played a lot of well known villains in films like Goldeneye (who was also a revenge motivated villain) and Patriot Games making him clearly suitably evil and manipulative, but one of his more underrated roles was as the mad scientist Dr. Merrick The Island (2005) who was an immoral geneticist who had no regard for human life a character who is easily very Rotwang like. This makes it really easy for me to see Sean try out playing revamped Rotwang. Sean also has the star power to be a draw for the film.
