"Celesteeeee…. Celeste!? Where are youuuu?" Having nothing to do that afternoon, I took a break from lounging on my bed and wandered the hallways, calling for our new maid. But there was no sign of her, at all… at least, until I smelled something amazing coming from the kitchen. And there Celeste stood in the midst of a mess of pans and pots and plates, her hands a blur as she moved around making… things. I couldn't make out what things she was making exactly, but I had a feeling they were delicious things. "Wow…" "Hnrgh? Mistress Valeria!?" Celeste jumped as she heard my involuntary exclamation, nearly dropping the knife she was holding.
"Oh… sorry, I didn't realize I'd scare you that much…" "O-oh, n…no!!! You just startled me a little, Mistress…" Celeste bit her lip, a rosy blush burning on her cheeks even though it was clear she was trying her best to stay as calm as always, and I couldn't stop myself from giving her head a small pat, like I used to do to Pri when she was younger. "Ah!?" As she let out a flustered yelp and her blush grew even redder, I took a look around the kitchen, and all the food that was still unprepared. "Want me to help?" "Huh? M-mistress? You can't-" "Come onnnnn, I'm bored!" I put on the most pleading expression I could, placing my hands on my hips. "Surely you couldn't be so cruel so as to let your Mistress die of boredom, righttt?"
"Hah…" Celeste sighed, now looking resigned. H-hey, it was almost like I'd roped her into something against her will or something… "Would you mind helping me to peel the potatoes, Mistress?" "Sure!" For the next few minutes we worked in silence, the pots bubbling on the stove providing a pleasant background din. "Hey, Celeste… why did you come to work here anyways?" "Huh?" I thought that she had missed my question at first, but judging from the concentrated expression on her face she was probably trying to search for an answer. "I'm honestly not very sure myself…" Celeste winced, raising a hand to rub her temples. "But I think I came here because it feels like where I'm meant to be, in a strange way. Are the potatoes done, Mistress?"
"O-oh, yeah!!" I handed the chopping board with the slices of potato to Celeste, and watched as she arranged them neatly in a wide baking tray, pouring in some sort of cheesy sauce before placing it in the oven. After she watched the oven turn on, Celeste turned back towards me, and for the first time I saw a smile on her face. "And no matter what… I'm glad I came here, if only because I could meet you, Mistress." "Ah…" Now it was my turn to blush, and I averted my face to hide my embarrassment. "If it wouldn't be too much of a bother, Mistress…" Celeste thrust a bowl of greens into my hands, "Could you help me wash these?" "Fine, fine…" Even though Celeste's expression had returned to its default placidness, I could see the tail poking out from behind her dress wag satisfiedly from side to side. It seemed that this was a bit like the kuuderes I had seen when watching shows before… I just needed to get past her icy surface.
