“Breathe in… breathe out… don’t panic…” I murmured to myself, very much feeling panicked as I stood outside the house, shrouded in darkness. It was long past midnight, all the lights in the house turned off - but I didn’t care about looking inside. Instead, my eyes focused on what was across the field in front of me, staring at the guest house and the single flickering candlelight I saw in one of the windows.
I heard the creaking open of a window above me. “You’ve been out here for nearly an hour, Mistress… are you sure that this is the right course of action?” Of course she was looking out for me… I couldn’t help but smile to myself, just a little. “I have to figure out what exactly she’s planning to do with this whole Imbuement thing, and with Pri... you still don’t know when she’s going to be out of the house next, right?” “...No.” The candlelight went out, and I sucked in a shaky breath. “Then this is what I have to do.”
Of course I couldn’t move right then and there - who knew how long it actually took Mother to get to sleep? “If I’m not back in two hours, call the police.” “Hehe… as if I wouldn’t come save you myself, Mistress.” “Well then, wish me luck.” Breathing in, I started to walk across the grass towards the guest house. I stayed away from the front door, slowly circling the ground floor to find any way in. Crunch. Crunch. Crunch. In the quiet of night even my footsteps on the grass sounded all the louder, and I kept a watchful eye trained on the second floor for any movement at all. Who knew what she would do if I was caught…?
Creeeeeeeeeeak. Slowly easing a window open, I clambered through it into the kitchen. “Step one down… now comes the hard part.” It was hard to suppress the chill of anxiousness that ran through me when I stared at the dark staircase leading upstairs… to Mother, and whatever secrets she had hidden away there. But I couldn’t let that affect me; not now.
“Now it’s time to try this out…” Shutting my eyes, I envisioned the sensation of building something around me out of thin air - a weaved cocoon in the air around me, surrounding me and holding me within… along with any sounds that I’d make. I remembered Mother “teaching” me this Enclosure spell a while ago, though with the original goal of trapping light instead of sound inside of it… so why shouldn’t it work on sound as well? Celeste had helped me test the spell out over the past couple of days, confirming that it worked… which should have made this a lot more easy.
The one problem? I’d never gotten it to last more than three minutes… which meant I had to move very, very fast. Holding my breath, treading as lightly as I possibly ever could, I climbed the stairs, step by step, at an agonizingly slow pace. Everything remained silent - not a noise came from Mother’s room, even as I got closer, closer… and closer. As I reached the landing of the second floor, I peered into the bedroom through its doorway, seeing Mother’s unmoving form lying on the bed - and the drawer next to it which held my objective.
Step by step, I made my way towards the drawer and crouched down. Mother didn’t stir at all, even as I pulled it open and drew out the black notebook. Just unravel the magic sealing away its contents, like I had once before… and as the code resolved itself into intelligible text before my eyes, I began to read. Even as the clock continued ticking on down… I would find out whatever Mother had in mind for Pri. Whatever it took.
