"Oh, Mistress! That was a quick shower!" Of course, Celeste was already setting out dinner, putting a plate heaped full of steaming, fragrant food right before me… but instead of hungry, all I felt was a small lump in my stomach. "I remembered you mentioning that you liked the one served at school, so I made you a spaghetti bolognese…" The smile on Celeste's face slowly faltered as she realized that I wasn't sitting down to eat. "Um…. Would you like to sit down, Mistress?" "Celeste… there's something I wanted to ask you." I swallowed, mouth feeling dry. "Of course! I'll do my very best to answer it!"
"When you cast the spell, to turn me into your Mistress… was I supposed to remember everything?" "Huh?" Celeste blinked, the smile returning to her face, but I could tell that it was definitely a little strained. "Well… that's all in the past isn't it? And it shouldn't matter to us now…" It was the same way she had tried to deflect the question when I last asked mit… but I wasn't fooled this time. "No, it matters to me, now. Didn't you hear what Dahlia said to me before she left? I'm supposed to 'remember' myself, whatever that means. So… what does it mean?"
"M-mistress…." Celeste sounded… weak. Not confident like she always was, not cheerful as she tried her best to stay strong for me, not even awkward as she tried to deflect my questioning. Just… defeated. Like she had given up on lying to me and herself, and was waiting for what would inevitably happen. "Please… anything but that question." But I couldn't stop now - how could I? I'd always been curious I pressed her further. "Celeste… please? I really want to know." "Hck…" Her eyes downcast, all the pep and spirit drained out of them, Celeste sucked in a sharp breath, nothing but resignation left in her face.
"The spell was supposed to return her back to me… in body and soul." I felt the blood rush to my head, my ears beginning to ring in an awful cacophony… but I took another step forward into the abyss. "And what would have happened to me, if everything had gone to plan?" "I-I'm sorry……." A tear slowly rolled down Celeste's cheek, her chest heaving. "There would have been no pain, and you would have just gone to sleep…. But still, I would never want to do such a thing!"
Of course. Somewhere deep down I must have known that this was the case, from the very first time that Celeste's tongue had slipped. Maybe I should have been angry at this revelation, shouted at Celeste, or hated her for almost killing me, just for the sake of bringing back the dead. But all I felt… was numb. "...Why me?" "You looked so, so sad there in the park… like there was nothing you had left to live for." Hah… was I really that pathetic? The past few days had been the happiest of my life - exciting, new, fun. It had almost been enough to make me forget where I came from, what my life had been before going to the park that night, and meeting that girl with the silver hair. But I wouldn't even have been alive to taste it, if Celeste's spell had truly worked as she had and I was gone, my body just a vessel twisted and warped into the shape of her Mistress, my mind emptied out for the deceased to inhabit.
Now, there was only one more thing left for me to do. "When I first woke up… you said that I could choose to return to my old life if I wanted to, right?" "..." She nodded, tear-streaked face turning towards me like I was ripping her heart right out of her chest. "P-please…" "I just can't, Celeste. You were going to kill me…" She shuffled towards me, laying a hand on my shoulder. I shivered as I felt her magic pass through me, my hair becoming shorter and returning to its black color. Needless to say, there was no more need for the pointy ears atop my head or the tail above my rear, and before I knew it I was a human guy once more.
I cleared my throat, my masculine voice sounding almost wrong in my throat. My body felt weirdly light and some places and heavy in others - had I already gotten so used to being a girl without realizing it? "Goodbye, Celeste… and sorry. Thank you for keeping my company these two days… I don't think I'll ever be able to forget them." I didn't even bother taking my bags - not that I had anything to take away from here anyway. Taking a deep breath, I stepped out through the front door - leaving behind the mansion, the maid quietly sobbing to herself on the floor, and the dinner, cold on the table.
