"Ah…." I had never, ever, seen Mother like this before. Her eyes were just a little wider than normal, her mouth open just a smidge, and her posture a little stiffer than the normal prim and proper… and for someone who I knew to be as absolutely calm and unflappable as Mother, it was probably the equivalent to screaming out loud and freaking out of her mind. Then, she smiled. It wasn't even a big smile, just the slightest lifting of the corner of her mouth… and before Mother opened her mouth I knew what would happen next.
"Priscilla." Mother got up now, the rest of the cake left untouched, and walked towards Pri, gently laying a hand on her shoulder. "Come to my house at noon tomorrow, and I will begin to give you lessons on magic." What about me? I desperately fought back the words as Mother headed towards the door. Clack. Clack. Clack. Clack. Clack. Then, she stopped and turned around, eyes meeting mine for the first time in… I couldn't remember. "Valeria, there's no need for you to come anymore." There was no apology, not even the acknowledgement that she was basically cutting me off from her entirely - Mother delivered this with all the emotion of a quiet, still lake unruffled by any wind. I didn't respond to her, not as she turned back around and left through the front door.
