    “I wonder if there's treasure here…” Though he had already been playing Valhalla Online for a few hours, Tim couldn’t help but still be impressed how realistic the game’s graphics were. After all, it was a VRMMO - the likes of which had only been seen in fiction before. Complete immersion in a game world that would seem every bit as authentic as the real world… that was what the promotions for Valhalla promised, and the game had definitely delivered.
    Tim had found it just a few kilometers away from the starting area, an opening in the ground with stone steps leading down into the darkness. Well, since it was so close to the starting area it couldn't be that dangerous, right? Taking a deep breath Tim started down the steps, the sound of dripping water accompanied him as he ventured deeper and deeper, a blue light up ahead drawing his attention.
    “What's… this?” Illuminated by glowing blue crystals was… a girl, bound by chains and seemingly asleep. She was definitely no normal girl - the HP bar above her head was enough to tell Tim that. But her name was indecipherable to him - all he saw was a bunch of question marks. “H-hey… are you okay?” Tim couldn’t help but feel some concern towards the girl, even though she was obviously a enemy meant to be defeated-
    “Hnngh!” The girl’s eyes flickered open, their irises a piercing ice-blue, and Tim felt a sharp pain in his neck, seeing blood spray onto the cold stone floor, his HP bar emptied in an instant… and his vision went black. As his consciousness faded away, Tim briefly wondered what would happen to him. But his fate would be very, very different from anything he could have imagined…
    A menu popped up, giving him the option to respawn immediately - well, at least it seemed that unlike some other VRMMOs, dying in the game didn’t mean he would die in real life. But… “I’m back here?” Tim found he was back in the cave, the girl from before nowhere to be seen… instead, he was right in the place where she had been…? Wait. Why were there chains wrapped around him-
    “Huh?” Tim’s vision glitched, static and dead pixels interrupting the pixel-perfect graphics, and as he looked down he saw similar disruptions running across the surface of his avatar. “Wait… ack!” The cave suddenly grew around Tim as the height of his avatar dwindled, proportions shifted to create a much more petite physique. His now ill-fitting starting gear completely vanished, leaving Tim naked and shivering a little in the cold… good thing there wasn’t anyone around to see.
    When starting the game Tim had made his avatar quite similar to himself in real life, down to the glasses that sat under his head of slightly messy brown hair… glasses that disappeared, no longer needed as his green eyes took on a particular, piercing shade of blue… His hair grew out and tumbled down his shoulders, messiness amplified as a blue color spread through it from the roots.
    “Is this… supposed to happen?” Mid-sentence Tim’s voice changed entirely, the young man now sounding very much like a young lady. As another visage was overlaid over his, Tim caught sight of his reflection, blurry in one of the crystals that surrounded him… he looked exactly like the girl he had encountered just right now, right here in this cave… and had killed him. “I’m turning into her?”
    “But why- arrgh!” A sound almost like a growl slipped out of Tim’s mouth, two weights added to his chest in the form of a pair of breasts, hanging free and their modesty just barely preserved by some small pieces of armor. A brief burst of pixels around his crotch was enough to change everything worth mentioning down there, turning Tim into a fully-fledged female.
    And then, the finishing touches - her ears migrated to the top of her head, gaining a pointed, furry appearance that spoke of a bestial heritage. A bushy tail erupted from her behind, hands coated in fur and sharp claws replacing the nails. The icon hovering above her head changed too, Tim’s username replaced a much simpler title: “Fenrir”.
    Fenrir sighed and sat down cross-legged on the floor of her prison, the events of the past few minutes - or indeed Tim’s life before that - already forgotten. “Ugh, I’m so bored…” Her voice echoed in the cave, the wolf-girl sighing listlessly as she stared up at the ceiling. “I wonder when a new adventurer will arrive…?”
