Description Just like Heavily Armed Porky, the Devil's Machine which houses the evil Giygas, went through a number of different designs.

Because this was meant to be a concept painting, I kept it very loose. All of the initial layers were painted in black and white. I did that because I always have an issue with making sure my digital art has good contrast. I then used the Color Replacement tool to add in color, but it has its limits. As values get closer to white, the Color Replacement tool loses its effects, which means that lighter areas must be repainted in order to give them back their color.

Two things were determined early on in the process though. The Devil's Machine, being an immobile device, would be attached to the wall of the redesigned Cave of the Past. And it would have to retain its disturbing quality that it was known for.

Initial designs for the machine gave it the appearance of a giant mechanical heart. It also had a series of large supports which attached it to the cave wall. One design which I really enjoyed had the machine held up high near the ceiling on multiple leg like supports. And when the battle began, the massive legs would bring the Devil's Machine down close to the action so that Giygas could attack from within. Sadly, this was too complex and had to be cut back.

But it was important for the Devil's Machine and Heavily Armed Porky to look as though they belonged in the same world. This led to the idea of a symbiotic relationship between the two of them. And so the Devil's Machine took on the appearance of a spider's lair. I took inspiration from spider's like the tarantula and created a webbed tunnel that would sit in between two of the large "spokes" that hold it against the wall.

Thanks. The project is already done, but I need to pose the models and get the lighting right before I consider posting the final products.
