Description See, the way I make most (all) of my lineart is a ridiculously long process involving pencil thumbnail sketches, scannings, printings, pen tracings, more scannings, and computer revisionings. Thus, it takes me a bit longer than forever to finish most of my pieces. Then I got this cool idea to simply trace the thumbnail sketch on the computer using the line tool (like 98% of everyone who calls themselves a "digital artist" probably already does) and save a lot of time.

Well, figured I'd try this -new- idea on a little picture so I sketched up Yoshi. And lo and behold... I had a finished digital piece the same evening! O.o

Not sure if this will work on larger pictures, because tracing on the computer is admittedly darn monotonous. But it DOES do away with that time-consuming revision stage, which can get so bad that I'm practically redrawing the penwork via computer anyway before I'm done...

I rant. It's Yoshi.

(bows)Oh great Atticus teach me the ways of making a pencil sketch into something like this. What program are you even using? Yoshi looks like he could crush that poor little egg, but what's with that scale on the end of his tail? Woohoo my first comment that doesn't start off with Billy Ma-oh darn it!

Ahahaha, well, since you asked... XD

Basically, it goes like this: 1: Make your pencil sketch (if you take up a quarter of a page or less you're doing it right XD). 2: Scan said sketch into computer. 3: Use PhotoStudio (a program one step above MSPaint) to resize your sketch and make any necessary adjustments. 4: Print sketch out onto a full page very lightly. 5: Trace this printing in ink. 6: Scan again. 7: Use PhotoStudio to refine the line work (erase unwanted lines, smooth others, etc.). 8: Add color and shading. Then yer done. XD

But with this particular pic here I skipped steps 4-7 and traced the pencil sketch on the computer with PhotoStudio. Yeah... XD

Anyways, thanks. The extra scale is just my personal touch. ^^

oh, well let's just say that all I have is Paint, am I doomed? Is PhotoStudio free/easy?

Oh I've done that but it's so time consuming. It looks good FOR A CHEATER!

You should make the tailscale Yoshi into an OC, he could be the misfit "All of the other Yoshis used to laugh and call him names, they never let poor(insert Yoshi's name here)join in any Yoshi games." XD

PhotoStudio is easy and might be free... it came with my scanner, so I never had to buy it.

Chriscellaneous In reply to Atticus-W [2010-02-08 01:56:13 +0000 UTC]

hmm I'm not sure if my scanner came with that. Any alternatives?

Atticus-W In reply to Chriscellaneous [2010-02-08 02:11:41 +0000 UTC]

Well... in theory, MSPaint could do the same thing. The only hard part would be erasing all the loose pixles of your pencil sketch after you've traced it in black. (The nice thing about PhotoStudio is that it has layers, so you can trace the sketch and then just delete the sketch when you're done with it, leaving the outline.)

Paint.Net has the layer feature, would that work?

Hehehe, yeah, congrats again about the motorcycle.

And yeh, I guess you'd really have to know how I make these dumb pictures to undertsand what I'm doing here, and before you'd know that I'd have to add about a page and a half more type to those comments up there. ^^ But then NO one would bother to look at the picture! Suffice to say I am WAY to picky about lineart quality 90% of the time. I clean it up the pixel.
