Description ----------------------UPDATE----------------------

Thanks to the plentiful and great comments here, I took some time to revisit the animation and fix the mentioned flaws. Such as missing teeth, fabric straps and the eyebrow movement. Besides that, I lengthened the final two 'expressions' because I felt they were too short. There are other changes, but too minor to mention. If you put them side by side, you'll probably notice them.

-----------------------------------------------------

Also known as: Tech Test - 'Live3D', Susan Edition

While playing through the Birthright route in FE: Fates, I had the joy of seeing some of the characters animated with software called Live2D. For those that don't know about it, it's basically an image of an character constructed of many 2D layers, giving the illusion of depth when moving and angling the parts around. An example of that can be found here . Either way, it's a nice feature that give the characters a bit more life to them.

Now I've wanted to revisit animation for a while now, and that along with having the random thought of "How cute would Susan be when animated like that?" resulted in me trying out some animation ideas for Susan. When I made and tweaked the first two seconds, the results were baffling to me. I just had to continue and see what I could do more. And that's how my quiet evening turned out into a 6 hour session and a render of 7 hours overnight.

So yeah, enjoy your daily dose of CUTENESS OVERLOAD.

Thanks! The eyebrows were fortunately easy to fix.

...Although I completely forgot to do change the eyelids. They should have widened/opened up when she raises the eyebrows.

Oh yeah true I didn't even notice that. I guess where her eyes are already big I didn't pick up on the eyes widening bit. Oh well you'll keep at it I have no doubt.

Wow, thats a huge improvement!

Well done, I hope you are going to keep making animations? There are very few good ones out there with this kind of content. (i.e. huge boobs, maybe even growth )

The teeth were the first thing I spotted, seeing as I was one of the people who mentioned them. She looks much better with them, even if it's only a small detail.~

Auctus177 In reply to MillieJonasen [2016-05-03 14:43:08 +0000 UTC]

Yay, glad you think so! The teeth really help back there.

Hmm, it's something I definitely should consider. Animation is something that could help me in my game-development career. Unfortunately, there are two technical issues. Those two are growth and the breasts reacting on clothing. Once I find a workaround for both of them, I can actively pursue creating animations which aren't just tests like this one.

Funnily enough, when I was first discovering all of this, 3D growth animations were one of my favorites. So to be this close to actually creating those myself, is quite the experience.

There's a thought, I have seen few updates on development for YOLCG in ages, it that swapping to 3D too when you have developed the skills further? That would be amazing!~

Auctus177 In reply to MillieJonasen [2016-05-03 14:53:44 +0000 UTC]

It has been something we've considered, but we'd like to focus on 2D for now.

But perhaps it is possible to create some kind of program (later down the line) that 'listens' to the game and updates the 3D model along with it.

Just a random thought, not sure how realistic that is.

I'd love to see something like that.~ I am on a games course myself, I'm pretty good with hardsurface 3D and I've been getting really interested in Unreal Blueprint scripting.

Your breast Physics are pretty Awesome! ^.^ Do you still have the source material? I'd love to have a go myself one day with Millie, I do 3D modeling at University.

Ohh, yeah I've seen you mention that on Marrazan's stream last Sunday.

Yeah, I still have it. I could zip it up and send it to you, although the materials will be missing because I'm using VRay materials instead of the regular ones.

Very cute indeed!

I love how everything it moving. Her hair, eyes, head, and rest of her body all come off very natural.

My only gripe is with the straps of her shirt. The way they move seems a bit odd however it’s fairly unimportant compared to the success you had with Susan's facial expressions.

Auctus177 In reply to Crake6441 [2016-04-28 13:56:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I've tried my best to make it look as natural as I possibly could. I think I've got knack for it, as I still think it most aspects could still be improved upon.

The straps? It could be that the breast movement isn't exactly natural near the end? Or that it doesn't have enough surface friction (which makes it bounce all over the place)? Maybe that with the fact that the straps have zero impact on the skin. My bet is on the friction.

Now that you mention the straps in general, I also noticed the left (our right) strap isn't welded to the actual bust-part of the dress. I thought it would be out of frame, but alas!

EDIT: I tried increasing the friction a bit, seems to fix the problem, I think. Here's an quick render, let me know if you think that solved the problem.

Indeed, I did mean the friction and you fixed it! Now the straps look like they’re properly resting on her shoulders rather sliding all over the place, nice work

If I was gonna suggest anything to work on, open mouths often look kind of strange to me in your work, even more so seeing it animated. I do really like the models though! ^.^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Auctus177 In reply to MillieJonasen [2016-04-28 01:14:28 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha, I couldn't resist adding it in after seeing it's success here . I'm happy it's adding to the overall cuteness of lil' Susan.

Yeah, I've seen someone point that out as well. I think that's because the jaw isn't moving, while the lips are. My earlier attempts at moving the jaw didn't work out, but I'll have to sit down sometime and finally create a working solution for it. Either way, I'm glad you mentioned it. Means he wasn't the only one who feels that way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MillieJonasen In reply to Auctus177 [2016-04-28 01:29:19 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure it's the jaw, that does move a little, for me it's the mouth shape... I think that it could be that you can't see her teeth. Like I can see too much of her tongue or something, It's really hard to say.

Really good animation has so many subtleties you don't really notice, I do some animation on the course I am on now. I did get praise for doing some really natural looking animation last year in college but this year in Uni... I am awful at animation X3... 3D modeling was always my strong suit.

Are your models fully rigged and able to be animated?
Because if there was some way to get those files into blender I'd like to take a spin at animating them....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Auctus177 In reply to Cross-Crescent [2016-04-28 01:23:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, they're partially rigged. Bodies are fully rigged while the face... is rather a mess. I usually ignore 80% of the bones there and mostly use morphs to pull off stuff like the eyelids and mouth movement. I have no clue how blender handles that though. There are also a bunch of helper objects that make animating a dozen times easier, but I doubt that'll export over as well. I'll have to try installing Blender sometime to see if it does.

Cross-Crescent In reply to Auctus177 [2016-04-28 19:44:31 +0000 UTC]

Ah, yeah, that'll likely be tough. Never worked with 3Ds Max, so I'm not sure how export friendly it is.

It's really well done. The only thing I can see that I'm having issue with is when she get surprised the whole eyebrow raises uniformly. Which isn't what happens. It doesn't look natural. Like put you finger on the outer part of your eyebrow closer to your ears and reenact that you won't really feel much move. You can also do it in the mirror as well to see it but I'm lazy so I did it the other way. The inner eyebrow would keep rising in suspire but not so much the outer side of it. A good example is here www.navone.org/HTML/Tutorial_D… obviously Dash is gonna have a much wider movement on his eyebrows since he's a more cartoony character. Even still if you look at how much the outer sides of his eyebrow move vs the inside you'll see a massive difference. With a few minor tweaks you'll have it spot on. Nicely done.
