Sub or dub, people have different reasons for liking or disliking--or simply preferring--one or the other. And based on those reasons you can assert that there are definite pros and cons either way. But in the end it simply comes down to preference.
And mine happens to be watching something, even the product of another country, in my own language. So if there's a dubbed version of a particular anime series available, most likely that's the version I'll mainly be watching. That and I think that the voice acting work done in most dubbed anime today seems quite good and likable; it definitely seems improved from work on anime series from farther in the past.
Most of the anime fanbase seems to prefer subs--and that's cool.
The BG I used is from a screenshot from Sword Art Online. It's copyrighted to it's original owners.

Haha, 99% of dubs are terrible. >3> Ah well, preferences are preferences. The only annoying thing when it comes to dub watchers is that they think characters aren't how they really are. A lot of dubs portray characters a lot differently than their original source.

I like dubbed but when they cut parts it pisses me off. Then I just go to subbed.

Hm, I think I slightly prefer dubbed but do not mind subbed at all. ^^ Also if the dub quality's abysmal then (obviously) the original's superior. o.x But I gravitate toward dubs if they're available & of reasonable quality.
(Case in point: Sword Art Online. ;D Although dubs also require patience to await their translating, hehehe.)

Oh, I heard that they're making more Sword Art Online episodes. They had like an OVA or something recently. I watched it on crunchyroll.

Yeah, they're adapting the next series of light novels, Gun Gale Online (following of course SAO and ALO in-universe). Waiting on this end for the OVA to be dubbed before Frost and I catch it. X3
Any other anime you've viewed recently? =O

I have so many series I want to check out, though. I had to make a list. xD And it keeps growing.

That's what Frost and I have done. owo We've made the list (and checked it twice! ). Still pushing through IGPX and The Pet Girl of Sakurasou, while we eye a couple more active anime in the future (Gurren Lagann? Outlaw Star? although I have already viewed Outlaw Star, I'd watch it again with her <3 and TTGL appears to be interesting enough without much gore or excessive blood x.x those being the reason that I cannot stomach Attack on Titan, regardless of its strengths).

Another series I watched in recent months that I neglected to mention was Angel Beats!. Short, but awesome. A bit of gore, though. And since the characters in a world where if they die they don't actually die, there's some dark humor about that.
Other series on my list are Maid-sama, Death Note, K-On, and the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Probably one of my favorite series of all was Clannad: After Story. You laugh one minute and cry the next with that one.

Clannad: AS sounds like The Pet Girl of Sakurasou, then: laughter one second; endless tears the next. ;w; I'll definitely try it out as well as the entirety of Clannad in general, if possible. ^^
K-On, that's one on our list too, plus Suzumiya. =O Death Note *might* be depending on the situation. It's not a high priority yet, is all. =S
Currently my favorite show that is in the middle of a season (meaning, not SAO or so on) is Littlest Pet Shop (the 2012 incarnation), from the same animation and voice acting studio as MLP:FiM. It's not a superior show to FiM, but overall I find its Seasons 1 and 2 to exceed FiM's respective Seasons 3 and 4 (just not FiM's Seasons 1 and 2). I'd recommend it in general as a quality cartoon with excellent songs and good fun, but if you've got enough to tackle already, don't bother. X3'' Then again, I don't like to push any media on anybody, be it a show, video game, book, or so on - no sense bashing anyone over the head with subjective opinion. OTL

Yeah. The first series is pretty good, too. It has the most random funny moments. xDDD The After Story concentrates more on the two main characters than the first series does. Oh yeah, and it makes you get so attached to the characters. That's what makes it pack a punch in After Story.
I might check it out. Maybe after this next FiM season. I'm not sure where season four is going. I don't think it's bad, but it's been better.
Another anime I'll be watching sooner or later is Madoka Magica. But it's genre is dark fantasy and tragedy, so yeah. I hear it takes the whole magical girl genre thing and turns it into horror. I'm watching it mainly out of curiosity.Β

Yeah. I've read like the first chapter of the light novels. I'm slower when it comes to reading manga than in watching anime.
I'm going to check out the new SAO episodes ASAP even though they won't get dubbed for a while. I love this series too much to wait. xD
Series I've watched recently include Fruits Basket, Soul Eater (which I absolutely loved), Code Geass (which is kinda tragic, but interesting), Hetalia (it's rated mature, but it's pretty funny), and I'm in the middle of Attack on Titan currently. Attack on Titan will be getting a dub within the next year or two. (Here's the opening, which I think is pretty darn epic: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OkpRK⦠)
Oh yeah, and my brother likes Naruto. So I started watching Naruto Shippuden with him this weekend. It's an ongoing series, so the last like 100, 200 episodes aren't dubbed yet. He says when he gets to the end of the dubbed episodes he'll wait for the dub to be finished and go check out the original series in the meantime. I'm not as into the series as he is, but I'll keep watching it.
Oh, there's a manga that's a spinoff of Soul Eater, called Soul Eater Not! I hear that's coming to anime this year, too. I've read a bit of Soul Eater Not!, and I'm looking forward to it.

I prefer swapping depending upon the anime in question.
Sometimes Americans will butcher an anime to death. This is the case of sailor moon where the main character sounds like a drunk 40 year old woman when she's supposed to be a sober 15 year old girl. And don't get me started on 4kids. However sometimes Americans do a great job with the dubbed. This is the case of cowboy Bebop.
It depends upon how good of a job America did with dubbing the series. If they did a shitty ass dubbed I will swap to the Japanese version.

Some I prefer dubbed, others subbed. Like Hayao Miyazaki's "Howl's Moving Castle," I watched the subbed and the dubbed, and I preferred the dubbed.

I watch both and I kinda enjoy dubs a bit more. Mainly because it's nicer to be able to listen to the speech instead of having to read the bottom of the screen where my attention ends up being divided trying to watch the anime while reading at the same time.
The anime elitists that say you're not a true fan if you watch dubs are annoying XC

I hear ya! On YouTube you can't glance at the comments on a clip from the dub without seeing at least one person going on about how all dubs suck and subs being superior. My gosh, makes me want to punch the screen sometimes. But then, youtube, go figure...idiots abound.
There was a video containing moments of a particular character and there was a comment going "sub is better"...But the thing is, that WAS the sub. The character in particular was an English speaking one, and the producers had picked a Japanese voice actor that was also a native English speaker to play him.

Woooooooooow some people I swear.
This one dude at my school tried to be an elitist douche
and say "If you're a true fan you wouldn't mind/be proud of having
your picture taken" (for our school's anime club) and I just said
"No, I just don't like people taking pictures of me."
......... >_>

Personally, it doesn't make much difference to me.
I will usually choose dubs because they're easier to watch but I will watch subs if I don't like something about the dub or if I can't find a dub.

It really depends on the translation and voice actors. Some anime, the plot is different between the subbed and dubbed version, and that's just not cool. And some anime have UNFORGIVABLE voice acting in English - at least in Japanese I can't tell when it's badly acted
But there are plenty of anime that I don't mind in English at all

audhdlassiedog In reply to CassidyPeterson [2013-12-25 23:43:57 +0000 UTC]
Is it just 4Kids that changes the plot in their dubs? Or do some of the better (IMO) companies like Funimation do it, too?

CassidyPeterson In reply to audhdlassiedog [2013-12-26 02:54:28 +0000 UTC]
I know that Card Captor Sakura was different between the dub and sub, and Sailor Moon was very guilty of changes in translation, but I'm not sure of other specific titles since I haven't really watched much recent anime.
Though I do know that the Sasuke/Naruto kiss was deleted from the dub.

Yeah, I heard a lot was deleted from or changed in Pokemon, too. I would find that annoying.
It doesn't seem to be done as much with anime series in general today, but by no means do I claim to know for sure. And it probably depends very much on what company is involved, too.Β
