Description
UGH. This one drove me nutso. The harlequin pattern on this is fantastic, but f*k me if I could not in any way, shape, or form, capture it in a way that did it justice! So frustrated. Not sure if my vision issue is interfering with things or if I'm just having a dry spell - either way it's pissin me off
I had to end my agony and just throw in the towel at some point to keep the pong moving so here is where I stopped fiddling with the lighting and texture. You can see it's a very cool shape - those two 'bridges there, with the bold geometric pattern starting up the sides.
One of the issues I encountered was being able to show the details in the light areas as well as the dark ones. WHILE also showing off the physical structure of those two bridges with the various edges and folds.
In the end, I settled for a little 'blowing out' of the lights so that you can see the little golden patterns in the dark areas as well. Also, the texture map I was using to get this pattern, had this horrid 'green/orange' as the base color of the other half of the fractal and there wasn't much I could do about it. I opted to do a little curve bending in post work, to at least get rid of the sickly pea-green and shift things toward orange/purple a bit more.
In any event, this color trap is fabulous and I strongly urge you to give it a shot. The triangular color patterns are clustered together and create very interesting places to zoom around and sight-see in.
Putting this under manipulated fractals only because I did do a fair amount of curve bending in Photoshop after the render.
This is my #088 of Marnie [miincdesign ] and my Pong series, Pongalicous.
Derivative of her 087 becomes my number 088.

I wonder if you couldn't have faked HDR in photoshop -- rendered one with the dark patches behaving the way you wanted, rendered a second with the light patches behaving the way you wanted, and then combined them to show them both off.
I know there's a way -- I played with it a little when I was taking photographs, but it works best if the shots are from exactly the same position, and I didn't have a tripod at the time. sticking the position would be a snap in a 3d program, at least.
anyway! just thinking out loud. add in another vote for loving that harlequin pattern. <3

Interesting idea!!
There is a fairly easy technique to bring out details by using the B in a HSB color channel separation as an overlay. I have done that with photos.
Will need to look into the Photoshop HDR capabilities to see if we can apply them to fractals as well. Would be mucho coolio.

drop me a note or ping me in another comment if you get stumped, and I'll dig out my old links on how I pulled it off in Photoshop.

awww thanks Patty! it's just frustrating when you can't what it's in your head to show up anywhere close on the render lol.

Not an issue at all!
I'm kind of glad that one got a little notice. It's one of my favorites.

This is amazing! I think you did an outstanding job of showing the patterns and the structures. You have grabbed that wow factor, but I know what you mean I have tried on several occasions with this set of parameters and every time I find a great spot, I'm having a very hard time coloring and lighting it. You hit it! Great job, Audre!

Hey thanks M!
I am glad you like this.
This parameter set is, as you say, a bit of a bugger to render up sometimes! Maybe I'll have another go at it a bit later on.

As I don't use MB3D I don't totally understand but although in your head you had something else in mind, those such as myself viewing this think this is just right good job

Martina, thank you so much for your generous support and comments!!
I really do appreciate you taking the time to leave them
I am just frustrated that I don't feel like I've presented the 'cool' factor very well of that harlequin pattern. It is so very interesting zooming around that fractal in 3D, but picking just one view to represent it was difficult!

Where did I see someone do that shiny harlequin recently, was it Patty? Were you trying to get the more striking shiny black/white? I liked yours

aww thank you.
i was hoping for a bit more of a crisp effect, yes. i will most likely revisit this when i have a moment to show a bit more of the wonderful coloring I was seeing on this one.
