Description
Deriving from the term "mare", which initially meant demon or foul creature, and "night" to insinuate the state of dreaming.
Other demons that hunted or worked during the night were incubus/succubus. The succubus would have intercourse with men during dreams, while the inucbus - whch comes from the latin word 'incubo' to mean nightmare - would lie with women and sometimes even father the offspring.

This may or may not be accurate, but I do take a lot of my inspiration from folklore and mythology and turn onto something of my own.
