haha actually I'd be kinda screwwed if I put anime in an animation portfolio. :C Here in burbank, they frown upon "anime style" as a go-to style  but it's still distinctly beautiful, I think.
I'm mostly exercising with it because I've always wanted to learn how when I was in high school The closest I could get until now was a sort of anime-western hybrid (which may or may not be the case still, I can't tell with this pic)

I suppose I understand the sentiment.  Many animes prefer efficiency over quality (the same can be said of western cartoons, but they are not so easily grouped under one distinction).  That said, I went on an anime bonanza over the past few months, watching any I could find that looked good, and I saw many with quality animation as well.
A hybrid isn't a bad thing if you like the way it works.  I think it comes down to how you handle the style and permutations of it.
