Description This is the first piece in a series of new artworks I made for Cullen Appreciation Week on Tumblr (Sep. 4 - 10). The theme of this day is “Maker turn his gaze on you...” - Cullen as a Templar ~ Kinloch Hold, Kirkwall, reflections on past actions- this day is dedicated to all aspects of Cullen’s service to the Order.

For this day, I chose to focus on Cullen’s reflections on his past in the Order - a past that follows him even as he tries so desperately to leave it all behind. I knew right away that, for this day, I wanted to create a symbolic piece representative of that haunting past and Cullen’s breaking from it.

The focus is, of course, on the lyrium in the bottle he clutches, symbolic of the lifeblood of the Order. The bottle itself is stoppered and bursting in the strength of his grip, the glass shattering and cutting through his gloves, causing his own blood to mix with the “blood” of the Templars. The lyrium gushes from the bottle like a wound and drips onto the Sword of Mercy embossed upon his vambrace, seeping into the gouge that cuts the blade in half. It threatens to drip upon the sword of the Inquisition that Cullen grasps in his other hand, but does not touch it. All the while, the shadowed banner of the Order folds in on itself in the background.

Even as the lyrium escapes, it threatens to corrupt. Even as the banner folds, it yet remains. Even as the Sword of Mercy is marred, it persists. Even as the bottle is shattered, it wounds the fingers that break it.

Is he driving the sword of the Inquisition into the ground in a gesture of determination? Or is he leaning on it for support? You decide.

Fantastic! The eye is immediately drawn to the breaking
bottle, but there are so many details once you look around.
It speaks volumes about Cullen and his fight with addiction,
so I´d say you´ve done right by your idea perfectly!

I really love this! You did an amazing job with the symbolism, I love the thought you put into it. Everything looks amazing, but I especially adore the broken glass.. it looks so real!

Fantastic work!

Thank you so much!

And I'm so happy you like how the glass turned out. I had actually saved it for last because I dreaded working on it so much.
