A misconception in 98% of cases, and one easily remedied in the 2% that WERE a problem. My dad was one of the people responsible for examining and fixing many of the core operating programs for our particular bit of the mutual fund industry. The so-called Y2K problem was blown way out of proportion in order to get people to panic unecessarily and spend a great deal of money on "survival" packages.
