Life Here is Amazing

HTTYD2 Fem!Hiccup Masterpost
Five years after Hiccup and Toothless ended the war, and Berk is now a haven where humans and dragons can live peacefully. While Astrid and the others are dragon racing—the hottest new Berkian sport—our favorite duo prefer to spend their time exploring a world that was once out of reach before flight.  Hiccup especially seeks to escape the exhausting clutches of her father, who insists on pushing her through chief grooming and finding a suitor.  On one of their adventures, they encounter a mysterious dragon rider, someone who turns Hiccup’s world upside down, and soon the pair find themselves fighting for a peaceful future once again.

Interesting name "genderbend." You should definitely use this idea on Dreamworks because they could use a little artist like you in their crew! Plus, I love those pictures of fem!Hiccup! They're very cool! I especially like the middle part when Hiccup (Mildred) takes off her helmet and smooths out her hair, but I would like it if she shakes it all out. Now, that might drive all the boys crazy on Berk, especially Snoutlout!   Hee hee hee! Anyway, on a scale of 1 to 10, you are a 12. Beautiful work!

Hiccup encounters pirates. Hiccup fights pirates. Hiccup kicks the crap out of pirates. End of the day, pirates are all tied up, happy endings all around and Hiccup can remove her helmet...

"Holy f**k, you're a *girl*!?"

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

ME TOO! That's my whole genderbent AU right there.  Just Hiccup is a girl… and the first movie is pretty similar but things start to shift for the second movie since there's no immediate suitor she has. XD

Lol. I mean, I guess if the writers were smart enough, they could make the romance between genderbent Hiccup and Astrid work and not too clique.

AvannaK In reply to wingedswordyunagi [2014-04-17 15:43:22 +0000 UTC]

Oh no, no no. Haha, I have written whole things about that.  For one thing, Hiccup is straight.  Like her male counterpart, she grew up feeling sexual attraction towards the opposite gender.  Not that she minds women per se, but she definitely hankers for the D.
For another, the romance was pushed and forced in HTTYD1 and kind of tarnished Astrid's character for it. This would be a great opportunity for that to not happen.  Without the sexual element Hiccup feels towards Astrid, we just have pure admiration and genuine desire for friendship and acknowledgment.  And that's what she would earn.

But also, viking culture… marriage… heirs. Hiccup would be pushed towards suitors like crazy in HTTYD2.

In my fem!Hiccup AU Astrid does have a relationship with Heather.  And she's often leaving a door open for Hiccup to pursue their friendship in a sexual manner, but Hiccup doesn't take it.  And Hiccup has had experiences with Camicazi as she grew up.  Also Thuggory and Eret.  It's a whole thing. XD

AvannaK In reply to AstridGoesForASpin [2014-03-10 22:10:52 +0000 UTC]

ARE YOU KIDDING ME
I like you--which is the only thing that's keeping me from giving you a loud and heartfelt screw you. Hahaha, sorry--but no way.  If Hiccup looked like that she would be just as popular. It would probably increase the men in the fandom.  AND AND AND women love women protags who are kickass and beautiful.  God, it would be even more popular in my opinion.  Also, it would show a female hero who would be relatable to all genders.  Fem!Hiccup is not different from male!Hiccup in anything other than body.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AstridGoesForASpin In reply to AvannaK [2014-03-10 22:38:33 +0000 UTC]

I understand that there's no difference other than in body. Check. Got it.

And I'm glad you like me. I love our debates.

So I'll disagree here - many men would shun it a little, because it would seem like another "Disney Princess" movie. Even though we know it's nothing of the sort, female protagonists in "children's movies" drive off boys and some men.

But perhaps my point wasn't clear enough - if Hiccup WAS a girl and the trailer was introduced like that, the helmet off...well, we wouldn't exactly be going on and on about puberty and his forearms. [NOT. That I have too much of a problem with the forearms.]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AvannaK In reply to AstridGoesForASpin [2014-03-10 22:44:58 +0000 UTC]

It wouldn't be disney princess at all.  AT ALL. HTTYD has very very few disney princess elements, and the only thing that WAS disney princess was the romance. Cut that out and it's even LESS of a disney princess movie.  You might be too young to remember Xena, Warrior Princess, but THAT had plenty of male viewers and that was about a woman and her woman sidekick. IT was about ACTION AND ADVENTURE.  Not any more disney than HTTYD is.

This isn't like Brave or like Frozen.  These characters were well told, organic, and real.  There was nothing remarkable about the HTTYD story at all, actually. It was how it was told that made it fantastic and stand out.  Hiccup's gender would but very little dent in that.  She'd still be remarkably relatable and personable.  As a male, Hiccup is already seen as having more "traditional feminine behaviors".  Her behavior wouldn't change at all, if she was a girl

We'd be on and off about how freaking HOT Hiccup turned out to be.  She was still an adorable little kid and went through puberty LIKE A FREAKING BOSS.  EVERYONE would love it.  The boys of the fandom would be dazzled. The girls would be JUST as dazzled.

So no.  It would still be JUST as popular, if not more popular. You are really, really underestimating how DESPERATELY we--men and women--need a well-told female hero that doesn't bank on romance in some way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AstridGoesForASpin In reply to AvannaK [2014-03-10 22:59:34 +0000 UTC]

I know - it's not a Disney Princess movie at all. Anything like it. It would drive a lot of people away because they'd automatically assume it would be. (Although hopefully the lack of singing would make a good impression.)

Eh...I'm not sure I agree. Merida and Elsa aren't slouchy at all in the looks department, but they don't get half the attention that Hiccup and Jack Frost do.

Hmm...possibly. HTTYD definitely makes a good case for not prioritizing romance - Hiccup's crush is just a crush, then gets eclipsed entirely by, like, real life, and his crush takes the place of tormentor/babysitter until everything comes clean and he's allowed to like her again. She's not pivotal to the plot at all.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AvannaK In reply to AstridGoesForASpin [2014-03-10 23:06:07 +0000 UTC]

It's not about looks--it's about execution.  Merida's film was… lackluster.   Frozen was better but… not as well done or heartfelt as HTTYD. It had to potential to be that, but it dropped the ball in several respects.  Hiccup's character is what made him a hit with just about everybody. His life, his choices, his behavior, his story--all of it was fantastic and fantastically done.

You've basically insulted women all over the place here. Seeing a woman doesn't mean "disney".  God damn it.  Now HTTYD was shittily advertised and the reason it became so popular was through word of mouth and getting the ball rolling.  The few people who saw it (no thanks to the bad ads) really spread it around.  Hiccup's gender wouldn't have put it off so much as DW would have stepped on its own foot.  So no, a thousand times no, it wouldn't be less popular if Hiccup was a girl.  It would steam roll into popularity the same way it did in this universe, with him as a boy.

Astrid is 100000% and I will say screw you again just for suggesting it.  Haha, the crush wasn't pivotal--in fact, it was bullshit and the one "disney" thing about the film--but Astrid certainly was pivotal.  Her position, her choices, and Hiccup's desire to have her in his (or her, in this case)'s corner is what made the movie happen. Astrid was so freaking pivotal that if she didn't exist we'd have Hitchups on our hands. PIVATOLLLL

AstridGoesForASpin In reply to AvannaK [2014-03-10 23:36:32 +0000 UTC]

Obviously you bring out my talent to shove a foot all the way up to my hip into my mouth.

About Astrid - the crush part. Was what I was talking about. [I kind of wonder why you like me when I keep making you so mad?] But, for the first half of the movie, she isn't pivotal the way she becomes when Hiccup drags her into the main plotline after Astrid Goes For A Spin.

Seeing as I'm a woman, I didn't intend that insult - I'm saying what I've seen to be true. Animation/DreamWorks etc. is more of a female like in general. Hiccup would appeal to women watching the first movie either male or female - because yes, the choices and personality and story, and because it's all "cute." (The word I hate most when describing HTTYD.) However, the fanbase went crazy with the new "hot" Hiccup from HTTYD2 in a way it wouldn't have for fem!Hiccup - because most of us are straight.

Men tend to watch animated stuff less, generally. They liked boy Hiccup because of all the aforementioned reasons, and because he was a good role model for their own kids (one of the reasons most of the men who watched the movie did.) I'm not sure how all those men feel about the new and improved HTTYD2 Hiccup, but I highly doubt they're on the floor screaming about his hair. (Or would be if it was fem!Hiccup.)

And kids? As weird as it is for adults to think, kids really identify with their own gender until they learn to think outside the box. All the young girls who watched HTTYD loved Astrid - hopefully they're old enough to love Hiccup in HTTYD2. The boys loved Hiccup, and will continue to idolize him - still an older, cooler role model. Fem!Hiccup would have been ideal for littler girls, and it would have the same aspect as above. But with no "leading lady" dynamic going on for a boy character, the young male viewers would have been minimized, much the way Disney attempts to drive them away in packs.

AvannaK In reply to AstridGoesForASpin [2014-03-11 02:21:06 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha, don't worry about it.  You don't make me mad!  Just more like 'wtffff'. (Though the Astrid thing could be argued that she was the reason he felt so determined to get to know Hiccup.  "Figure out what side you're on" she barked at him, and then he got that look before he tried to approach Toothless)

I still find your argument is invalid. After all that, sorry . You're advocating "Hotcup"--Hotcup is such bullshit.  Hotcup is "hotcup" because Hiccup already has this amazingly loyal foundation, and people loved what the foundation built into. (I mean, looking at 'hotcup' objectively he's just 'okay'; you gotta see him in action, know him, to really feel the attractiveness).  Don't get me started on the hotcup fandom and the stupid elitists that pop up. People who make posts like "Okay, everyone's going to love Hiccup for being Hot but I'm a REAL fan". It's all so idiotic and juvenile.  Don't buy into that.  Hotcup would still be hotcup as a woman.  If Hiccup was always a girl, the HTTYD fandom would snowball as it would, and it would have a different power behind it; it would have been a successful female-driven story--but no less powerful.  So when HTTYD2 rolled around--Hiccup's hoard of fans would have taken one look at her and gone "boy-oi-oi-oi-oing". MALE OR FEMALE.  In fact, it would have drawn males into the fandom at that point (especially the pre-pubescent ones).  If the "Bronies" have taught us anything, it's that men can be into marketable "girly" things too if they're well done, and shit yes HTTYD has everything that would appeal to everyone.   Holy shit--I mean, can you imagine the men that would be into it for HiccupxAstrid?! Even if they're just friends, everyone would push it a little further.  That's hot lesbians to market. All the TOOTHCUP that would be so much more popular? If she were a woman?  And here is not only the world that is all around attractive, or the characters, it's the story.  This is an epic story.  It doesn't discriminate.

So at the end--HTTYD with Hiccup, both one and two, would still be amazingly popular.
HTTYD wasn't well advertised--so the marketing approach that you're trying to pitch is barely valid.  It would have started as flat, and built up as people realized the gem it truly was.

Except it would also be ground breaking.  It would have been a successfully told female-hero story and it would have eventually been shoved in the faces of everyone.  Holy shit, in so many ways the world truly missed out on fem!Hiccup.

Well, this whole argument has made my day. Just want to point out something I read about Legend of Korra, which I think applies to this situation and female protagonists.
"Conventional TV wisdom has it that girls will watch shows about boys, but boys won't watch shows about girls. During test screenings, though, boys said they didn't care that Korra was a girl. They just said she was awesome."
Httyd could definitely work with a female protagonist.
Also, Yes, fans would go "boy-oi-oi-oi-oing" for Fem!Hotcup. And lesbians- mmmmm.
