Description
Name: Vogel Falke
Born: April 11, 1830; Berlin, Prussia
Died: January 30, 1918; Copenhagen, Denmark (age 87)
Allegiance: Assassins
Bio: Vogel was born to a retired Prussian soldier and an Austrian mother on their family farm just on the edge of Berlin. They lived a simple life, with Vogel and his mother spending most of their days working out in the fields. However, political turmoil made things difficult as the years went on. Vogel’s father had to get a job at the factories in order to help support his family, and he'd come home every day tired and weary. It broke the young Vogel’s heart, as all his life he had idolized his father as a kind, energetic, and strong man. The strain on his family growing up would instil a deep hatred of the elite and the powerful in Vogel, one that would shape the course of his life journey. And as it happened, he wasn't the only one with such feelings boiling up in Prussia. Many were lobbying for a change to the Prussian government by 1847, and King Frederick Wilhelm IV was eventually forced to call a Diet to discuss the creation of a parliament and a new constitution. However, elite politicians such as Otto von Bismarck lobbied against these proposals, and the tension of ideologies inevitably began to boil over.
All over Europe, 1848 was the year of revolution. The monarchy in France had been overthrown and Austria was thrown into revolutionary turmoil as well. Soon that rebellious zeal came to Prussia, and the citizens of Berlin rose up in protest against the king. They scared him into giving in to their demands for more rights and freedoms, all the while conservative elites and armies worked from the outside to try and squash this rebellion. Vogel, wanting the rebel cause to succeed, took it upon himself to investigate and combat these outside forces. And it was on these personal missions of his that he learned about an Order known as the Templars that was pulling the strings of the elites that had abused him and the population his whole life. As he began working against the Templars, he came in contact with their mortal enemies: the Assassin Brotherhood, who like him supported this air of revolution by the common people. It didn't take much convincing for him to volunteer to join their ranks.
1848 and 1849 continued to be years of turmoil in Prussia. While the constitution and parliament that the rebels had demanded did technically go into effect, they were heavily corrupted by conservative Templar influence, and the rebel cause was turned against itself. With the rebellion mostly suppressed, a bigger concern took center stage for both the Templars and Assassins: the unification of the German states. The Templars, headed by statesman Otto von Bismarck, sought to unify the states under their Prussian banner. The Assassins sought unity too, but hoped to eliminate the elements of tyranny the Templars planned to implement under their rule. The Assassins sought an ally in the King’s brother, Wilhelm I. Vogel was tasked with making him the new ruler by killing Frederick Wilhelm IV in 1857, but he failed to do so. The attempt did cause the king to have a crippling stroke however, so Wilhelm was appointed regent anyway. Wilhelm had Bismarck informally exiled to Russia, and sent most of his Templar buddies packing with him. The door was opened for the Prussian Assassins to take the stage and attempt to solve all the social unrest.
Things only seemed to worsen, however. Wilhelm became king when Frederick Wilhelm IV kicked the bucket in 1861, and he grew tired of the chaos that plagued his reign. He turned against the Assassins that helped him rise and recalled Bismarck in 1862, hoping the Templars would have the strength to bring order to the nation. The Assassins were thrown under the bus again as Bismarck and the Templars enacted many policies that hardly made things easier on the common people. Things only grew more complicated as the Templars manipulated politics across Europe hoping to unify the German states under Bismarck’s Banner. The Second Schleswig War broke out after the death of the Danish king in 1863 left a power vacuum that gave Bismarck the perfect chance to rally an army and take the mostly German states of Schleswig and Holstein. Vogel had travelled to these states during the war, and it was here that he met a charming but quiet Assassin named Lærke Ørn. The two became good friends and would continue on several adventures together, before eventually falling in love and getting married.
Despite this brief moment of loving peace in their lives, things didn't get any easier in the fight against Bismarck and his Templars. Prussia went to war with Austria in 1866. Prussian victory led to Prussia gaining control over huge chunks of Austrian lands, making it the new dominant power in this newly formed German Empire that the Templars ran. The only power that stood in Bismarck’s way now was France. Vogel and Lærke rushed to help their French brothers defend their borders, but it proved futile. France suffered a major defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1871, and the German Empire was now firmly established as a force to be reckoned with.
Vogel was enraged, feeling this tyranny had gone too far. And so from then on he devoted all his time that wasn't already devoted to his family to bringing down Bismarck. In 1888, Vogel killed the traitorous emperor Wilhelm I so that their ally Frederick III could take the throne. His reign only lasted 4 months, however, as he died in June. Nonetheless it was a boost to Assassin morale. The Assassins manipulated the new emperor, Wilhelm II, into removing Bismarck from his position in 1890. A soured and broken man, Bismarck was confronted face to face with Vogel in 1898. The two exchanged bitter words, with Bismarck warning the younger Assassin that without the Templars, the world would fall into chaos within only 20 years. Vogel simply replied with the hopeful policy that the Assassins and humanity could overcome any scheme the powerful and oppressive throw their way, and then proceeded to assassinate the ex-chancellor.
Things calmed down, relatively speaking, after that. Vogel finally got the chance to take a deep breath and settle down with his wife and their son Frederick in Copenhagen. Vogel was even given the joy of becoming a grandfather when his son's daughter, Augusta, was born near the turn of the century. Vogel also lived to see Bismarck’s prediction come true, as the assassination of Archduke Franz-Ferdinand in 1914 triggered the tragedy that was World War I. And while Vogel died before the signing of the Treaty of Versailles and was not able to see the horrors that came with Bismarck’s prediction, his own prediction would prove true decades down the line. Despite the economic horror that Germany was in leading to the rise of Templar pawn Adolf Hitler in 1933, and his tyrannical policies leading to the beginnings of World War II in 1939, the people still overcame these obstacles in the name of goodwill towards men. Vogel’s great grandson, Adler Nesher, served in the Second World War to prevent the Templars from spreading their evil across the globe, continuing on the legacy that his ancestors carried before him.
Vogel is an ancestor of Ava Arlie.
