Description

Recently (within the last five-ish years?) I've been really into doing kaiju costume designs.  They were sort of inspired by a previous Matt Frank contest he did in the past concerning monster designs that were built around the idea of how a person would fit inside, but the challenge sort of took on a life of its own.  There was a time when I thought I might actually try to build a suit myself built on my sketches and take it to cons and stuff...but yeah, that's probably pie-in-the-sky stuff.

In any case, I started doing sketches of a Godzilla redesign that was heavily based on the short-snouted caiman.  The idea was to give Godzilla slightly more crocodillian features without sacrificing his bulk or chunkiness.  I was also partially inspired by the Stan Winston Godzilla design from the Jan de Bont movie that never happened, which I both love and take some issue with.  Some sketches make this more evident than others.  I would like to keep pursuing this design, possibly color it and digitally realize it, but...we'll see.  God knows at this point if I will get around to that.

I think this sketch makes it a little more obvious about my caiman-inspired design.  The brow, the eye, the teeth, the way the mouth opens and the jaw is shaped, the puffy bulging neck, the way the knobs go down the neck, the way the classic Godzilla "ear" has been replaced with the weird crocodillian bulge (not sure what it's called)...
