ULTRAMAN LONGINUS

ORIGINS: It is not properly understood whereabouts the Ultra came from, but that seems to be exactly what the Ultra wants. From wherever he hailed, he seems to have brought much of its baggage with him, explaining both his somber attitude and his ruthless deliberate style. It is believed by the few who know him for what he is – and that is an extreme vagary – that he perhaps failed in his duties to protect his original home…or, perhaps, he found himself on the wrong side of the conflict, and was responsible for a disaster or two he was could have prevented. For whatever reasons, the Ultra finds himself on Earth following the recent invasion of an alien presence that could spell doom for the whole planet, and he is taking particularly merciless care in nullifying the threat it poses. Perhaps the path he follows is not that of an invasion fleet, but one of redemption, in the hope that whatever horror he is responsible for, he can make up for it here on a planet that can never have enough heroes…(hence his name, “Longinus,” a reference not the legendary spear, but to the legionary who bore it, who is said to have become a saint after seeking a life of redemption).

HOST: While hailing from the United States, Corey Crawford finds himself in Japan on a foreign-exchange-student-trade during an alien invasion. As giant monsters surgically target certain parts of the country, it becomes apparent that they are searching for something, and as luck would have it, Corey thinks he’s found it: a spearhead-shaped object (the Ultra’s transformation item) that seems to have sought him out. This object holds within it the essence of an Ultra, and its *ahem* persistence to have someone well-equipped enough to wield its power seems misplaced and badly-timed. Corey may not know what it is he has in his possession, but he doesn’t feel he has what it takes to look after it, whatever it may be. But, if history has proven anything, the called are rarely qualified; but through action and experience, Corey may be the one person who can stop Japan from being destroyed.

POWERS, WEAPONS AND ABILITIES
-While LONGINUS can be more formidable than most of his brethren, he prefers to stand in one spot to weather attacks than to strafe and evade, expelling his energy needlessly. For this reason, depending on how stationary he is during combat, LONGINUS can stay in his Ultra form for nearly a minute longer than other Ultras. Over-exertion whittles time down considerably, however.

-THE LONGIUM BEAM is the most basic of the Ultra’s attacks, meant mostly as a deterrent to prepare for a meatier blow. The beam is lauched via the crossing of the arms in any direction, fired from the palms. A wall of this called the SAFE-GUARD can briefly be made by sweeping the arms as the enemy attack nears, and can only be achieved with split-second timing. LONGINUS prefers not to dodge attacks, however.

-Preferring to get his hands dirty, Longinus’ main weapons are the bracer-like knuckle-extensions he wears on his arms. While they can be used in typical hand-to-hand combat for tooth-and-nail tactics, they can be charged with energy through the spear-tips on top of them to make blows that more devastating. Similarly, the spear-tips on the leg-bracers can reroute energy to LONGINUS’ boots, enabling him to root to the spot in a battle, or to launch him into the air. He prefers not to fly, but certainly has the capability.

-KINETIC BARRAGE is a means through which LONGINUS can gain a temporary edge over his opponent without the needless expounding of its energy. LONGINUS can briefly convert the vibrations of all things around him, even something so small as down to the single decible, even a barrage of attacks being thrown at him from an opponent, into a retaliatory attack, without ever having to use his own reserves to power it. This is not something the Ultra can always take advantage of, but does whenever he can.

-THE JAVELIN BEAM is an aesthetic choice more than anything, but it is far more effective than the LONGIUM BEAM ever could be. This blast’s energies are focused to a point almost to the point of having density and mass, that when released are known to pierce through nearly any surface, monster or otherwise. It must be charged via the crossing of the arms in order to be achieved, and must be done so during combat without being interrupted. (A variant of this is the JAVELIN THROW, in which a nearly solid beam manifests and can be thrown from the hand, Olympic/Zeus-style, at an opponent).

-THE FORLORN HOPE, the Ultra’s most powerful attack, is a physical dumping of all his energy. The blast is meant to destroy a target utterly, even at the expense of LONGINUS’ life in the process. For this reason, it has never been used, but if and when the opportunity arose, the Ultra is more than willing to use it. What his host might feel about it is a different story (named after the “cannon fodder” shock troops of old, particularly Napoleon’s infantry).

MOTIVATIONS AND INSPIRATIONS
I went with red and silver, for better or worse, because it’s traditional ol’ school Ultraman. I was tempted to make him a part of the Blue Tribe, but I figured it would conflict in the SEDNARAH battle pic there and it would just be a big blur. Plus, with all the ideas a “Longinus” theme had going for it, red seemed a more sensible choice. The “Longinus” name was actually where I began, but not for any religious reasons; it more or less served as a metaphorical inspiration for a back-story and some aesthetic choices (I just thought it sounded cool: Ultraman LONGINUS…). The design is a military conglom of a lot of cultures’ armor sensibilities, but in predominant ways I based it most off of Roman legionaries. I wanted LONGINUS to be more brutish than other Ultras, since they have mostly aerodynamic lithe designs, give or take a couple, and I liked the idea of an Ultra that broke the trend and still stayed true to it in some regards (hence, again, red and silver). The pronounced chin and the squinted eyes kind of establishes that too, and makes him look kind of arrogant, or maybe just determined. I was tempted to make him a spear or pike-weapon, but I thought that would be too gimmicky: I compromised with the JAVELIN BEAM. I drew him in battle with SEDNARAH because I haven’t drawn him in a while: I drew GOMORA and RED KING and started on BALTAN in the background, but it made the background too busy and distracting (I’ll just save on drawing them later, how’s that sound?). I try to mix up elements by turning them on their heads, the original dynamics of the character or the franchise, but then keeping them true to the source-material: that’s how I developed the back-story, which I hope is both fresh and reminiscent.

And, as Hellboy would say: "There you go."
