About an hour speedpaint because I was incredibly bored today, resulting in younger-anime!Hiccup. Man, I wonder how long I'll do fanart for this movie? I don't think I'll stop anytime soon though
Quick question for you guys: how do you combat art blocks? I usually just wait it out, but then it would be one less activity for me to do over the summer.
Oh, and the thing on the stick is supposed to be a sock (can't draw anything lately haha). The left one, to be precise

The way I fight my art block off is I draw a picture of a bck with a evil face and draw different ways to attack it. Last time, I drew me holding it over the edge of a cliff while threatening to let go, then I suddenly got an idea of a really cool picture that I drew (and haven't uploaded). True story!
Also, despite what everyone believes, trolls exist! They steal your socks. But only the left ones....what's up with that?

As I said it's cute, but I would like it more if in the background there was a mysterious figure poking it's head out from one of the trees in the background. (I do very much wish to believe trolls do exist in HTTYD world)
I do like your style. Yes, the eyes are a bit anime!-ish but the rest seems illustrative enough to balance it out.

Aaaaaaaanything! Whatever I'm listening to influences the stuff I draw, whether it's happy, sad, sexy, kinda abstract etc. If I'm doing fanart I find it helps to listen to FSTs (I kinda COLLECT THEM LOL).

Read books and talk to different people. Movies are nice but they already have stuff cut out for you; they can guide your imagination, but they don't help you exercise your imagination much.

oh, piss off. it's fine to do fanart once in a while. lighten up. art comes in any form the artist wants to make it. it's an indefinite practice. there's no right or wrong thing to draw. but, you know, there are always people like you who disagree, so i guess to each his own.

Wow, amazing advice! I'm not an art professional, just a kid in summer vacation right now, so most of my art tends to be fanart haha. It would be nice to explore some original art.

I usually beat artblocks... by drawing fanart! There's someone relaxing and mindless about drawing other people's characters I find.

I agree with what you said about drawing other people's characters though. For me, I really enjoy letting people know that I like a particular work and sharing fangirly feelings with others, and thus I don't have a great desire to create something original. Makes me a bad artist, I know, but I'm content with what I have.
I think I became a little too obsessed with fanart though because someone recently said to me that my art was too good for someone studying bioengineering XD

I don't draw that much fanart myself. I only post fanart on deviant art because certain sentences in the account agreement about art copyrights seemed iffy to me. I mostly show my other art on my LJ. So to me it's relaxing to draw fanart since it's "special".
Though, I guess if art is not your priority (bioegineering would be) then you would be more into drawing fanart then original pages. I guess, yeah, you are pretty good at drawing for a bioegineer *laughs* Then again, plenty of awesome science people were also artists (most obvious example - Da Vinci). It takes an open, creative and artistic mind to comprehend science and developp theories further. So, I take it back. you're not a talented artist for a bioegineer. You've just got good genius potential!
Also, I have a degree in cultural administration. So Yeah. It's not science, but it's not the "pure, disorganized, free-spirit" artist stereotype either.

Art block...I try to do something random. Like, pick a color, shape and animal and just have at it. You get some really strange things that eventually turn into things that make sense.
It works for me, but you seem far more logical with your art then I am so I have no idea. Good luck, though.
