That's probably why Sega didn't make Tails a girl because it would cause a literal pairing war within the SOJ franchise, even worse than the one between Sally and Amy.
I mean, since Amy and Tails are two of Sonic's closest friends in the games, both of them no doubt would have hinted at being Sonic's man.
Honestly though, I find the idea of a female fox flirting with Sonic kinda creepy. Well, Fiona wouldn't be too bad, but she's a rare exception.
