using a video by Istebrak youtu.be/UydvG6Kf8bg for reference heres a batch of form/value studies i do for warmups. along with her notes i copied for this first bunch, anyway heres sorta the steps for this excercise:
1.polygon lasso/pen tool to create a random geometric shape, fill that selection with a midtone value/color.
2.now deselect and choose a value for your lightsource. keeping in mind that the lightsource will always have the brightest value that nothing else should match or exceed. meaning when you paint the highlights on your form you can use the same color but make sure the opacity is 90% or lower
3.proceed to paint your form adding geometry as you see fit but limiting 1 value/shade to 1 plane. planes at different angles receive light differently, light bounce should also be considered. all of this can be done on one layer
