Description
What Is Wicca?History
Wicca is a neo-pagan religion based on the pre-Christian traditions of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Its origins can be traced even further back to Paleolithic peoples who worshipped a Hunter God and a Fertility Goddess. Cave paintings found in France (and dated at 30,000 years old) depict a man with the head of a stag, and a woman with a swollen, pregnant belly. They stand in a circle with eleven mortals. These archetypes of the divine are worshipped by Wiccans to this very day. By these standards, the religion that is now called Wicca, is perhaps the oldest religion in the world.
In 1951, the laws against Witchcraft were repealed in England. A man named Gerald Gardner was the first to come into the public eye with a description of what modern witches were practicing. His information came from the traditions of a coven called the New Forest Witches, and from Ceremonial Magick and the Cabballah. He began what is now called the Gardnerian Tradition of Wicca. From Gardnerian came Alexandrian Tradition, and a host of other offshoots that today number in the hundreds.
Misconceptions
For two thousand years the image of the Witch has been associated with evil, heathenism, and blasphemy. These ideas have their origin in Christian myths created to convert members of the Old Religion to that of the new. By making the Witch into a diabolical character of ill intent and action, the Christian missionaries were able to attach fear to a word that had once meant Healer, Wise One, and Seer. These fears are present to this day. When we think of the archetypal image of the Witch, we remember the evil enchantress of childhood tales. We think of an old, wrinkled hag with a nasty wart on her nose. We think of hexes, and devils, and foul incantations chanted around a bubbling cauldron. While we modern witches have been known to stir up herbal remedies in a cauldron, we are a far cry indeed from the horrifying Wicked Witch of the West!
Witches Do Not Worship Satan. To believe in Satan, one must subscribe to the Christian mythos. We do not. Wicca does not have any belief in, nor do we worship a concept of evil incarnate. All life is perceived as a constant flow of positive and negative energies, which intertwine to create the balance of life. [From my own experience, I must say that the only evil I have ever observed in the world has come from Man. There are no ax-murderers, or child-abusers to be found in the animal kingdom, or in nature as a whole.]
Witches Do Not Cast Evil Spells. Modern Witches have a very strict belief in the Law of Return. Whatever we send out into our world shall return to us, so even the most ill-tempered Witch would not consider doing magick to harm another being. The spells that we do involve things like Healing, Love, Wisdom, Creativity, and Joy. The "potions" that we stir might be a headache remedy, or a cold tonic, or an herbal flea bath for the family dog.
Beliefs
Immanent Divinity
Wiccans believe that the spirit of God/dess exists in every living thing: in the trees, the rain, the flowers, the sea, and in each other. This means that we must treat our peers, and all the beings of the Earth as aspects of the Divine. We attempt to honour and respect life, in all its many and diverse expressions.
Nature.
Wiccans learn from and worship nature by celebrating the cycles of the sun, and the cycles of the moon. We look into ourselves for the cycles within that correspond to those of the natural world, and try to move in harmony with the movement of life. Our teachers come in the form of trees, rivers, lakes, meadows, and mountains, as well as other humans who have walked the path before us. This belief infers a reverence and respect for the environment, and all of life upon the Earth We revere the spirits of the elements that create our world. Air, Fire, Water, and Earth combine to manifest all creation. From these four elements we gain wisdom, and understanding of how the universe unfolds. The rhythms of nature are the rhythms of our lives. Wiccans attempt to dance in step with the pulse of the Earth.
Other Faiths
Modern Witches believe in freedom first! We do not choose to look at our path as the "one true right way," but as one path among many to the center. We do not convert new members to the Craft, nor do we advertise or prosteletize. We believe that anyone who is meant for this path will find it through their own search. Wiccans practice tolerance and acceptance toward all other religions, as long as those faiths do not preach or commit harm to others.
Afterlife
Most Witches believe in reincarnation of some sort, whether it be the Eastern version known as the Transmigration of Souls (the spirit incarnating one body after another in an effort to learn all the life lessons that it can), or Ancestral Incarnation (where the spirit and life lessons of the grandfather transmute to the granddaughter, and so on down the genetic line). The latter is a more traditionally Celtic approach, but both are accepted.
Sin
In Wicca, we do not have a specific concept of sin. There is no heaven or hell that souls will go to based on their worldly actions. Wrong-doing is governed and determined by the individual conscience. With the belief in the Law of Return, one's actions will determine one's future. The individual is therefore responsible for his or her own fate, based on what he or she chooses to do internally and externally in the world.
Ethics
Wicca has but one law of action and ethics. It is called the Wiccan Rede or the Wiccan Law, and can be found under the Reading Room category of the same name. "And ye harm none" covers almost everything that the Ten Commandments do: don't lie, don't steal, don't cheat, etc. It encourages us to strive not to harm any living thing - including ourselves - except perhaps to survive. Whether this means that you must become a vegetarian or a passivist is up to the individual. The Wiccan Law serves as a guideline to action, not a mandate. The only law that the Ten Commandments express that is not covered by the Wiccan Law is that of marriage and adultery. In Wicca, love itself is sanctified, with or without government authorization. As long as two individuals share a sincere bond of love that does not harm either party, it does not matter if they are legally joined, if they are heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, or interracial.
Leadership vs. Hierarchy
There is no Arch Bishop of Wicca. There is no one person or organization that determines the practices and beliefs of Wicca as a whole. Instead, Wicca is formed of small nebulas groups and solitaries who are charged with the leadership of themselves. Wicca is a religion of clergy, not followers. Each person who seriously pursues the Craft, whether it be through study in a particular tradition, or through self-teaching and private learning, has the choice to become a priest or priestess of Wicca. Most modern traditions of Wicca offer a three year program of learning that will bring the student to the level of High Priest or Priestess.
Churches and Temples
Wiccans do not usually have churches created specifically for the worship of the gods. Our temple is found in nature, among the creations of the divine. We meet in a circle that represents the Circle of Life, and the equality that we share. There is no head, no top, no beginning and no end. When necessary, our circles take place indoors in houses, apartments, or wherever we can find a sacred, protected space. But ideally, a circle will take place in a grove beneath the stars, with the silver moon shining down from above.
Magick
Witches believe in the power of magick to create change. A prominent Wiccan author named Starhawk defines magick as "the art of changing consciousness at will." By being in tune with the rhythms of life, we can create change for ourselves and for our world. We use herbs, oils, colours, stones, crystals, and other symbolic materials to represent the change we wish to create. Wiccans believe that the individual is responsible for his or her own reality. If there is something that is not healthy, or conducive to happiness and growth, we have the power to change it. As aspects of the divine, we are each Creator and Creatress, filled with the power to manifest all that we dream of or desire.
What is Wicca?
Wicca is a forest in the light of the silvery moon...a glade enchanted by the light of the Faery. It is the dewdrop on the petals of a flower in bloom, the warmth of the summer sun on the skin, the fall of colourful autumn leaves, and the softness of winter snow upon the Earth. It is light, and shadow and all that lies in between. It is the song of the wind, and the tune of the tides. It is the symphony of life! To be a Witch is to be a healer, a teacher, a seeker, a giver, and a protector of all things living and alive. If this path be yours, may you tread it with honour and with light!

Zoroastrianism would like to have a word with you. I don't mind Wicca/Wiccans, but saying that it's the oldest religion is perhaps inaccurate.Β

I was an Islam, but I came to the Wccan's path when a friend showed me the pavement. I was scared at first, but after some compelling research, I've learned that gods are gods and Man is Man. We have been blessed with free will, so the divines didn't want us to follow a set path. I've always believed that peace is achieved not by unity, but by tolerance. Wicca symbolizes that concept of peace perfectly. I am currently a covert practitioner, but the time to show my Wiccan pride will come soon enough. Blessed be!

Love this I've been needing to get back on my path but school has been bothersome.
The only thing that saddens me about it is that not only do many believe it to be 'evil'. But I've met a fair share of Wiccans who
automatically assume their path is right and every other path in Wicca is wrong. To me, it doesn't matter what path in Wicca you
choose or how you are taught it. If you follow your path you will find the right of way.
I love your last bit as well, extremely poetic and meaningful!

I discovered Wicca years ago in high school in the midst of dealing with domestic abuse from my stepfather towards me and my mother. Β It felt very calming and I believe it began to heal what my stepfather tore apart in my being; however, I was accepted to a Christian college, and have been afraid to delve deeper into the Wiccan religion simply because I'm surrounded by devout Christians who don't agree with a lot of my views (so I often keep to myself because I don't want to anger my friends). Β But I'm on my last semester of college and would love to finally gain more knowledge about Wicca. Β So this was very helpful. Β It helped remind me why I fell in love with it in the first place. Β I thank you.

I found my way to the god and goddess a few years ago and my path was interrupted by the blatant ignorance of my parents. Born and raised christian, those teachings quickly no longer made sense to me and i sought out a new path. tried many different paths and the only one that brought me true joy was Wicca. it saddens me that my research was cut short and thus i seek a teacher to no avail as of so far. i have found my way to my own personal gods and goddesses, since i have prayed to and worshiped in my own way to these devine beings who have brought me such joy in life. but i know not the the tools i need to properly practice on the sabbats of which are so marked on my yearly calendar along with the moon cycles to which every full moon and new moon i peer at the night sky with a wide grin knowing my gods and goddesses look upon me with favor.

We got in a huge fight and now I do my worship and research in secret. The only problem with this religion is not a lot of people are very open about being Wiccan and there is no specific gathering place where you can find people to help you on your path. Wicca is an initiatory religion, meaning you are initiated into legit Covens and study with them,to have a legitimate claim to the title Wiccan. I should know, I've gone through the process. Wicca=initiatory mystery religion. To BE Wiccan requires undergoing initiation through a coven. Ask a Gardnerian or Alexandrian, and i think YOu need to re-study dude,as I'm pretty sure this is the established definition of Wicca within the Wiccan/Pagan Community. I should know,I'v gone through the bullshit to be able to SAY I'm Wiccan.

I have lived with Traditionalists(Gardnerians and Alexandrians)who teach and uphold the belief and standard,as set forth by Gardner, that to Be Wiccan, one must BE initiated into an established coven. Neo-pagans nowadays have tainted Wicca so much with misinformation and fluff bunniness that it angers people, like me,who have gone through the years and days to GET the title of Wiccan, then those of you who think that just cuz a book says your'e Wiccan, makes it so.
Wicca is a mystery initiation religion, not some open book belief system like Christianity or Judaism. While i do,on some parts, agree that Wicca SHOULD be open and available to everyone,i think it should also stay a well-enclosed religion, because of all the misinformation presently out there spread by those who know not what it really is,and by those who would continue to lie and spread nonsense to those seeking Wicca.
I have gone through my Year and a Day,thrice over(3 years,3 days, total)of study WITH various covens and study circles, here in Pennsylvania. I have witnessed the heart and soul of rituals that brought tears of joy to my eyes, and a deeper understanding to myself of the forces that shape our lives. When you can act on accord with nature and the divines will, and take responsibility for EVERY action you do...then can you say that you are Wiccan. But until initiation has been done,by a coven, you're NOT Wiccan. Hate to break the truth to you. You're just a witch, otherwise.
Take it or leave it. We Traditionalists are getting so tired of newbies thinking they can NOT go through all the original work and sweat to gain a title that once was secretive, and not some fashion fad of the modern age.

Sorry to say, people can be solitary Wiccans and never be part of a coven.Β There are even solitary, eclectic Wiccans.Β There is no written rule saying if you want to be Wiccan you have to be in a coven.Β One good source of this fact is a book called "Wicca, A Guide For The Solitary Practitioner", by Scott Cunningham.Β Another good book to source is "Paganism, An Introduction To Earth-Centerd Religions", by Joyce and River Higginbotham.Β Of all the articles, books and videos I have seen and read, nowhere does it say you HAVE to be in a coven to be Wiccan.Β I can understand if someone wanted to be a Gardnerian or Alexandrian Wiccan, being in a coven would be a prerequisite to that tradition.Β Sitting there saying such negative things and telling everyone they are wrong about their path is not the right thing to do.Β Everyone is free to practice what they want and how they want as long as it hurts none.

I was raised around, and studied with,Traddies(a term to refer to legit Wiccans who've undergone initiation into a coven. They, and i say they loosely, would tell you otherwise.
Wicca is a secretive, initiatory religious tradition, meaning one usually undergoes iniation of some sort,to legitimately be a Wiccan. Otherwise, you're just a witch, pure and simple. Thats how i was brought up,and that is what many Wiccans, old and young alike, have taught me. I,stand by that rule.

Hate to burst your bubble pal, but there are a lot of people out there in the world that strongly disagree and I'm one of them.Β There is nothing secretive about Wicca, if it was a big secret, then why are there countless books on the subject?Β Go on YouTube and search for Wicca, you will see all the video blogs people have done about their path.Β Everyone is free to practice what they want and how they want as long as they harm none.Β If someone puts in their "year and a day" into the religion they want to follow, then they have every right to go by the title associated with it.Β If a someone believes in Jesus, can they not call themselves Christians if they don't go to church?Β Sure they can, same goes for Jewish, Muslim, Pagan, Satanists and Atheists.Β I need no approval to call myself Pagan.Β If someone believes in Wicca and it gives them great joy and happiness, they follow it with their whole heart, no matter solitary or in a coven, they have every damn right to call themselves Wiccan.Β I can tell you 100%, nobody on this earth can tell them otherwise.

shadows-play In reply to HelloHailey [2011-12-21 16:42:18 +0000 UTC]
As far as I know marriage, although you might want to do research yourself, is a ceremony called "hand fasting" in which a gold cord and a silver cord are used to bind you and your partners hands together while you say your vows. Literally you "tie the knot" with the cords.
Some say you need a high priest and high priestess to be there but there are also cases of solitary hand fastings.
I believe that you need a chalice of wine to symbolize the Goddess and an Athame to symbolize the God, calling them both down to share and help out with your happiness and thanking them for doing so.
If you are doing this with a high priest and priestess they will do a ceremony for you and your partner. If you are doing it alone, in my opinion you can do anything you'd like.
Even a Catholic or Christian style marriage where you exchange rings is acceptable. As long as it means something to you and it shows your love for your partner.
Again, this is all my own research and opinion so please don't take my word for concrete fact.
There are many resources online and in bookstores for you to search but only do what you feel is safe and acceptable.
Hope this helped.

The best part about Wicca or The Craft is the Wiccan rede. "An' ye harm none, do what thou will."
Whatever you want to do, do it so long as it hurts no one, INCLUDING YOURSELF.
I'm Roman Catholic or was, and I practiced the Craft before I became Wiccan.
There's no harm in it at all.
Then again it all depends on who you talk to. There are covens and groups of Wiccans who say "There are no Christianity or Catholicism practices in Witchcraft."
But why not? I understand that to Christians and Catholics there is only one God.
But why can't the beliefs of Christianity and Catholicism be incorporated into Wicca as well? Wicca and The Craft is meant to be inclusive, that means EVERYBODY is welcome to it.
At least that is what it means to me.
So to say that having a Catholic style wedding while being Wiccan is bad is false.
Think of it only as "is."
It is not bad or good. If you want to do it then do it girly.
And remember, you are you, not your parents.
It's good to acknowledge what they want but you don't have to walk the path your parents paved for you.
If you do you will never learn all there is to learn, you will never be all that you can be and you will never grow to the heights you were intended to grow if you walk along another persons path.
It's a little daunting coming out of the broom closet to loved ones especially family members just because of all the ridicule one faces.
When I told my mother I'd been reading about Wicca she immediately started calling me a devil worshiper and whenever I spent time with me nieces and nephew she'd say "stop whispering sixes into their ears."
But my mother isn't me. And there will be some people who don't understand and who simply refuse to understand what Wicca really is.
Just remember, if it is something you want to do and your heart tells you that it is "right" if it feels "right" then just do it because if it calls to you then it is what you should do.
Again, these are my own opinions, subject to flaw as well as any others so don't base your final decision on my words but rather what ever you feel is in your heart or what feels right to you.
So if you want to have a Catholic style wedding and make your vows in front of the Catholic God, then do it. for every God and Goddess is there to watch out for all of us.
Remember, it is not the Catholic or Christian God who secluded their people to their religion it is man who said that he is the only God.
Wiccans can chose any god or Goddess to dedicate themselves to so why not the Catholic or Christian God as well?
You can still be Wiccan if you do this, I believe everyone in their own way can be Wiccan.
What are prayers but spells?
What are Holidays but Sabbats?
I guess my life's path is to connect everyone and try to make everyone full of love and light.
I hope I've helped you although I do tend to ramble.
If you've any other questions girly then just ask.
I'll see if I can help.

Thank you for educating people on Wicca. So many fear and hate me because they don't really know what Wicca is.

Thank you so much! This clears up a lot for me. I've been thinking about Wicca for quite a while now, and I'm thinking of pursuing it. It really is a beautiful religion, and it's certainly clicked with me more than any other I've come across.
