I am a Thomas and Friends fan, and when Calling All Engines came for Thomas' 60th anniversary it didn't end well some a lot of fans were really angry about everything of it. For example the overall pacing feels pretty slow. Yeah, the plot in this special isn't the most complicated out there. Not necessarily a bad thing, mind you. It has a clear direction, but it sometimes drags on a bit.

The learning segments are pointless. Yes, they were introduced during the Hit era, alongside its new episodes through airings and DVD releases. The difference here is that the learning segments among the episodes can easily be ignored and you wouldn't miss much. But here, they are played out in a way to at least move some parts of the plot along. I appreciate the effort, but I think young children can easily understand what's generally going on without having to "learn" anything outright. You can cut the segments out, and perhaps the special could have its pacing improved with that.

Some characters are handled questionably. One of them being Emily. And I'm going to say that this is definitely one of her worst portrayals of the series. Thomas only wanted to let her know about what was going on during the days' events and instead she acted all hostile, insisting him to be quiet. Of course, it isn't until Thomas decides to sleep outside by himself that Emily realizes she really misses him.

Another character which is pretty obvious in this case, is Diesel 10. As it had been stated, "Calling all engines!" isn't a sequel to "Thomas and the magic railroad", and Diesel 10 and Lady's appearances were pretty much for merchandise. While it is a nice move to make Lady a figure in Thomas' dream, Diesel 10's portrayal in this special is definitely... interesting, to say the least.

In the movie, despite not being canon, he was shown to be a merciless, power-hungry villain with the desire to destroy Lady and take over the world. Pure evil right there. But here? He's simply a grump who wants to be really useful like the other engines, and doesn't mind helping Thomas when he is needed. That is definitely a bit strange, not to mention unsettling. Maybe they could've simply filled Harvey in for the role of clearing the trucks away and nothing much would change. And as I mentioned in my review of the previous special, this is where Diesel 10's character began to get more confusing, whether he's evil or misunderstood, and that's something I don't think he'll ever shake off, especially considering his later appearances and roles down the line(no pun intended).

And even though HIT Entertainment called it Calling ALL Engines, they don't have all engines like Boco, Bill and Ben or others, and the learning segments make it boring.

So if you want to fix, change, or rewrite Thomas and Friends Calling All Engines, what would you do?
