Description
Are you familiar with this image? Feel like you've seen it somewhere before? Maybe as a VHS front cover? Why yes! Yes you have. This is a recreation to that cover art by illustrator Peter Bollinger. I always liked his rendition of the Toho classics and this is my take on it.Original Peter Bollinger illustration: sta.sh/018gi63fw4vo

That's because it is. I used one of the few PNG renders I made myself, but I haven't released them (yet) because the Godzilla model itself was created by artist dopepope and I would need permission first. Anyway, I used this particular design because: A) it's the one from the trademark logo; B) because it is one of the few designs that convey what Godzilla in general looks like rather than what the character from a specific movie looks like.

Damn, I so remember seeing that VHS cover as a child in a mall one time. Though I was technically looking for the '98 film as that one was my childhood before finding out more info on the franchise, this VHS cover still always stood out to me. That also brings back memories where I pretended to be Zilla when chasing one of those remote control helicopter toys in that same mall >3<'''
Now that I watched this particular film years later, I do like it, but understandably, I actually do prefer the original Japanese rendition of the film. It's actually one of my favorite films and designs along with 2000, Legendary and Shin. Though it is fascinating the Marvel design is rendered here, due to the fact that as you stated, this is one of those designs that convey what Godzilla looks like in general, making him easier to be marketed to a wider audience, which is what LegendaryGoji has also done, and bada-bing bada-boom, amplified an entire new generation of Kaiju fandom started by Pacific Rim. To quote Gorizard here, it is truly a wonderful time to be a Kaiju fan
