Description
Some sketches of Hexabrachius villosus (found here with gobs and gobs of information: [link] ) that I did after some feedback on the original drawing (and contest entry) from .They've been labeled so they're pretty self-explanatory I think. Their gaits are similar to a horse's, what with the ungulate body structure. Their coat thins out in summer and thickens in winter (and the quills thicken too!) making them look much heftier in the colder months than they actually are. Although they do not hibernate, their metabolisms slow down and bands will spend much more time sleeping than they would in warmer months.
The full mane mutation is more common in males and is pretty self explanatory--instead of a crown of quills behind their ears, the quills extend completely down their neck, similar to a horse's mane. In some cases, it can reach all the way down the individual's back to join with the rump-quills. This individual is named Calvin and belongs to my roommate. C:
In the middle of the bottom row is a sixfoot skull. The double eye sockets and nasal passage is visible, as is the slight crest atop the braincase for the anchoring of the jaw muscles. The last one is two young sixfeet adventuring in a tree. They do not much look like they belong in trees, but try telling them that.
In developing them further I've kept most of the original traits; the only thing that keeps getting lost is their whiskers. Maybe they weren't meant to be.
Done in pencil and inked with a pen from a gynecologist I've never visited.

lol, now that gynecologist will never know who all these new patients he's getting is coming from
Well, all children (no matter the species) tend to be mischevious and hard headed, so that's not surprising! And I hope you do keep the whiskers, I thought it looked good on them!! These are very good though, keep it up and I hope to see more

That naptime one is really cute. Should totally have had them laying down, though. Snuggles!
If I may make a suggestion, I think that the quills should get shorter in addition to the hair getting longer during the winter. The quills act sort of like the fins on a computer heat sink. They conduct body heat, and allow it to dissipate into the atmosphere easier. So to keep more heat in, the quills should either fall out and stay gone until summer (when they'll be useful for mating battles and such between males; or females if that's how they roll), or fall out and grow back shorter and thinner/denser.

Ooh that's a good point! I hadn't thought of that. My thinking was that the quills, as thickened hair, would then thicken with the rest of the coat. They don't actually have their own blood supply (like hair), so I'm not sure if it would dissipate heat since the blood is not actually running through them? Not sure though.

that's a good point also. Hmm. I suppose they wouldn't dissipate that much heat, since blood doesn't flow through them...
Still, something to think about.
Wiggly ears, ftw.
What kind of environment do they live in? The kind that would get snowy during winter, I would suppose?

They're native to deciduous areas, although there are subspecies that live in more mountainous regions and have a coat that's more like the winter ones year round, and some that live in more grassland areas with shorter coats as a constant. But your normal Common Sixfoot likes him some forests. x3
