Description
Carlsbad "Carl" Drake was part of a team trying to recreate, under laboratory conditions, the "big bang". Safety systems were checked and double checked, magnetic containment was optimal, but still the experiment hemorrhaged out of control. As the maelstrom of energy released obliterated the lab and killed several members of the team, Carl made a desperate bid to enact the emergency shutdown. He was successful and the energy flow was reversed, collapsing the reaction in on itself in a violent implosion. Miraculously, Carl survived, but was forever changed by the reality altering accident. Now his physiology was forever transformed and he requires isolation in an energy dampening chamber or everything in his immediate vicinity is in danger of being annihilated in the storm of primordial energies surging around him. A scientist specializing in power transmission and suppression, Dr. Daphne Harper eventually created a containment suit capable of controlling his destructive potential with the aid of engineers Sasha Kalinova and Sasha Bertrand (the Sashas). Seeing no other options for himself in the short term, Carl has adopted a heroic identity as Threshold. Of course none of this is possible without Dr. Harper and the Sashas to maintain his suit. Eventually Carl would like to find a way to resume a normal (or close to it) life, but until a way of controlling or safely eliminating his power is discovered, he does what he can to safeguard the public good.
