Welp. I finally finished this picture AFTER SUCH A LONG TIME!!
I really like the outcome of this piece. The shading was a pain, but after a bit of exploring through the Layer Options, I worked and worked and worked on this till it looks satisfactory to my eyes. At least it ain't as bright as my digital drawing of Sagacious~ |D

And I had a bit of fun with the Gradient tool as well while I was doing the lighting and background, as you guys can see. Now... let the critiques come flying towards this piece, cause I really want to know how well I've done for this!~
Pwetty please?~
And yis, that flame is real bad. :u *needs to work on fire more* And NAOP, you're seeing it right. |D Roslan's fan flame is green in colour~

That expression is cocky indeed, and really great perspective work. I agree that next time that fireball should be emitting a second light source! I read you were a little afraid of mess to do it, I feel you. Just look at this mess from four years ago wingedhippocampus.deviantart.c… vs my newest piece wingedhippocampus.deviantart.c… . Both have lots of light play, but one looks terrible and the other less so. Let me tell you what I learned between then and now when it comes to playing with light!

Take advantage of those layers! In my first piece there, I just tried to splash the light all over on top of all the layers, and if I messed up, which I did, too bad.
Keep in mind the shape of everything being lit up, highlight it like you would when simply coloring. Another thing I did not really do in that first one.
Pay attention to how light strikes edges. Running color along the edge of something really makes it pop, even if you just color the linework a little.

I'm still learning myself, but I hope that helps for the next round!

I am so definitely keeping a majority of what you've said into consideration.

My sincerest of apologies that my reply to your detailed comment is brief, but... in all honesty, I just love to read detailed comments such as yours~ Thank you so very much for your thoughts and suggestions on what NOT to do on my future pictures<

Okay, let's see here…
Well, talk about Roslan's actiony pose you did there~ The anatomy looks pretty nice and well proportioned for this. I also really like the shading, like how there's some soft light and dark tones such as the hair and his tail for a soft texture. Though, maybe you could probably add a bit more of it for his lower portion of his left arm, seeing it's a bit flat in colour? But looking where the lightest part of the shading is, at least I can pinpoint where the light source's coming from. c|

Despite you missed out on the green glowing effect you could've added (I guess you forgot, I suppose? ), that green fire does stand out against the complementary background, and that's pretty nice. I heard there's a brush that has a fiery texture when used, so probably something like this would come in good handy. xD Besides to probably tone down the blue and the yellow in the left-side of the picture in terms of how contrasting it is, the colour choice you used makes his attire not too distracting, yet it appeals to the audience.

Overall, you did a fantastic work, Axe! Looking that you worked on this for quite a while, I see you've put effort onto it~ Not to mention you're also improving on handling the tools and brushes in Gimp too.

Whoa!~ o Ao
Hahaha... the original sketch was actually done months ago, even before the basic colour ref sheet of Cassandra and Arianna were done. |D Needless to say, my anatomy style might have changed again, so.... :'D yeh. Anyways, looking at the lower left arm now... oh dang nabbit. Welp, I really oughta learn more about shading then~ It'll take a while, but it'll hopefully show soon. I mean, I'm still trying to get the hang of digital. |D Still.

I just couldn't figure a way to add that green lighting without turning this piece into a mess. D; I mean, sure, a green flame looks cool and all... but I don't want to do it in a background like this one! And I don't really know what to do for the background after I'd completed the line-art and colouring and shading, quite frankly.... ^^" It's like, I want to do something epic, but knowing my skill with digital drawings at the moment, I can't just work on this in total darkness. Accidents happen, but only a small percentage of it will turn out successful. And I don't want to risk that. Either way, I still need to get the hang of digital shading, seeing as it's so different from traditional shading. And then there's the problem that I really don't want to select the wrong colours for the shading as well. So much more to learn... I'll get around soon, not to worry. c':

Thank you so kindly for your compliment, my friend!~
Seriously though, you're too kind with your comment here. ; u; I actually cried a bit upon seeing this....

…I'm pretty much guessing the sketch of Roslan was done about the same time you did with Sagacious and somebody else, eh? c; As well as to mention your style of drawing seemed to change dramatically over the years too, what else would I say~?
I understand, since what I can see are literally a bunch of brush tools inside a program that's only controlled by a mouse if we don't have a tablet pen. :I And frankly, that also applies to cell-shading as well. xD It's whenever you're trying to add something that makes the picture look more detailed but realized you've made a mistake the whole way, it's hard to change it all the way back to where you started from. I would like to try some bits of soft-shading more often, but getting a good grip to do it is difficult to start with. D; But people say if you keep pursuing after it, you'll be able to achieve something hard like this in a matter of time, no? Takes a while, yes, but the results itself will be significant afterwards.

Well, you deserve one for the hard work you did, so no need to thank me. :'D You're very welcome~

Pfffffft~ X'D Somebody else. That's a good one~ Though honestly, that's all a part of my plan. C|
Honestly, I'm just frustrated that I can't seem to keep my style in one place. It likes to dash about here and there, restless and never satisfied, just like myself. It's never-ending, but then again, it never stops evolving. And... it's better that way, now that I think about it. :I Thank you, my friend~
Well, that's what the "Ctrl+Z" command is for, hm?~ :'D And saving the file before we go overkill with the details, of course. I mean, I'm sure that the both of us have come across really spectacular artists on dA who've used only a mouse to create amazing pictures, no? If they can do it, I'm sure that we can achieve that scale as well, with plenty of challenges in the way like how I did in my previous reply here.

Asfgjhkll!! ; n; But still!

But I thought I remembered seeing another of your characters altogether in a picture… D; Ah wells, guess I'll wait for it in the meantime then. xD Well, I honestly thought that's a good thing, because you get to at least experience each of it while you can. And then if there's a technique for them, I would use that and apply it to the other styles so that they'll become… well, a different style. :'D
True, true~ It's all in the matter of patience, is all.

Hm? c:

Axe-Cell In reply to StR-Lite [2014-09-10 13:49:20 +0000 UTC]

Oooooh... you'll get to see who this other character is~ C| I haven't really given him enough love like how I'd done to Rossi and Pei-Pei and Cassie, so it's understandable why you couldn't remember his name. |D
Well, I happen to have this dilemma that "if my style keeps changing, my watchers would start questioning my capabilities" or that kind of stuff. :I Myeh, this is what I get for having a calculator mind.
Ooohh... nothing~ c;

StR-Lite In reply to Axe-Cell [2014-09-10 14:37:25 +0000 UTC]

What? :'D Wait, I know the character's name of course, but I don't know whether I should say it here or not. |D
Eh, I change my drawing style once in a while, but not much surprise there, really. xD Though so far, I haven't had a question like that before… I'm probably guessing that it's common around in dA?
Oh fine. |D

Pffft~ I see what you did there~
I don't really know. |D Personally, I have that question rolling around my head, haunting me every time that I look back and find that I couldn't replicate a style that looks quite good. So.... it depends. :'D

HASBEAN [2014-09-07 16:48:39 +0000 UTC]

Great work! I love his stance and the gaze of his eyes. It gives a good feel for action and engagement to the image.

Lineart is nice and simple. I always preferred to narrow off any line ends to a point instead of leaving a square. (Makes it look more professional and is pretty quick and easy to do)

My only critique would be on the shading. Layer options are great fun to play around with and can make images far more seemingly bright. However they can rob areas of the lightness or saturation you want. (I.e Shoes are so dark I can't see the line art in some place while others just look still flat colored; blue yellow and somewhat of the white) The other thing I would like to mention is how the shading doesn't always describe the shape. A good example would be on Roslan's hand where light touches each of his knuckles, so shading defines the shape of the object without the need of a line art. However in the instance of his hair, the line art is describing small chunks of hair flowing away from the main. The shading here however describe something different. Also, is the flame a light eating flame?? That would be cool Wasn't sure if you intended the light source to be away from that or not.

I can see the work put into this picture It's really good (Green flame is awesome BTW!! ) Keep up the fantastic work!

Axe-Cell In reply to HASBEAN [2014-09-08 00:39:50 +0000 UTC]

Oh thank you so kindly for your critique on this piece, my friend!~ *takes note about the pointed line-art ends rather than to leave them as squares part*

Yeah, shading. I've always had an issue with it whenever I can't see the whole picture as I shade this piece, working on a magnified screen and all, quite unlike how I would normally do for my traditional drawings. Though... now that you mention about his knuckles... I didn't think that such a small amount of shading would actually achieve that. *takes note of that as well* I really ought to get the hang of using the saturation function to achieve a light and dark effect on my digital drawings instead of just white-and-black on an overlay layer, except possibly for the eyes.

A light eating flame? Well that's an interesting concept that you've raised there, Paige~ But no, this flame does not consume light. Instead, it consumes heat. Gah, I didn't add any of the lighting from that flame!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HASBEAN In reply to Axe-Cell [2014-09-08 01:58:36 +0000 UTC]

Wait..you work black and white and then use layers to saturate? Cool! I was never satisfied with what the layer options gave me, so I didn't keep using them.

Aww I was kinda digging the idea of a "light eating" flame. though eating heat is probably more purposeful..I guess. *thinks of how one would use either*
Either way its cool And you're welcome, I try to be helpful when I can.

Axe-Cell In reply to HASBEAN [2014-09-08 02:09:19 +0000 UTC]

Welp. At least I learnt something from this experience. Now to make my way around them on my next picture!~

Why would anyone want a flame that consumes light? That's just... the opposite of what a flame is supposed to do. Same thing goes for the heat consuming variant, despite it being a really bad choice in a really cold zone. But it works against those who plan to use fire-based attacks, consuming the heat before it touches the person that the flame is supposed to protect~

HASBEAN In reply to Axe-Cell [2014-09-08 22:36:16 +0000 UTC]

Cool! Its a counter fire flame~

Maybe a villain that works or gains power in the dark could use it! ......though that's not Roslans style I'm sure.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Axe-Cell In reply to HASBEAN [2014-09-08 23:13:03 +0000 UTC]

And it still works as a light source!~

Wait, you're referring to the light consuming variant? Well... that depends on my characters/items, and whether or not I can find a use for a flame that consumes light. You're more than welcome to use the concept for your characters if you'd like to, since it was you who'd came up with that concept when you saw Roslan's green flame.

I was in a rush when I was typing the description of this piece, so yeh, that explains why I didn't put that in.

Okay I will.  And that Sir.Drake to you.

Considering that you don't have a drawing tablet, I'm impressed.  Fire is hard and to get the light effect, I can note you the steps and tips.
The all over shading is quite nice and I like the pose.  Something you may find interest in is how to make the metal based items have a shine to them which I can explain in a note.

All over it looks neat.  Digital would be a positive change to make.  I like it.

Oh fine then, Sir Drake. |D

Pffffft. It's what you call practice with the mouse, my friend. And... there's no need to Note me on how to achieve the lighting effect when there are tutorials on dA that can save your time from explaining it all to me via Notes. And why Notes to begin with when you can type it all out in the comments?
But for the metallic shine, I would like an explanation on that one. Hadn't taken my time to search for a tutorial that teaches me how to achieve that, so yeh. But still. You could've done it in the comments!
