How do you do this? Do you make the starry background and then vector a tree/owl? It looks awesome.

hehe not quite - I haven't got a paid job yet
I made the starry background first in photoshop, lots of textures and such in there (wood, water and sky) then added stars (ps brushes), built it up over a few layers then I found an owl photo and traced it (pen tool) in photoshop also did the same for the tree and filled it with a black... saved the lines (paths) placed it on a white background this time for a varnish plate... so for the final print product the silhouette of the owl and tree is glossy 
if you really dig this type of thing, you should check out a career in graphic design - it's competitive howver it's fulfilling to be creative
