MCworld's Thunder Highlands are typically thought of as the inhospitable, storm-plagued lair of the gremlin and ogre species, making the area an unpopular tourist destination. However, below the steep highland cliffs, on the cold gravel beaches which separate the highlands from the sea, the story is a very different one. For one month each year, the beaches fill with the sound of seal calls. The area serves as the ideal mating ground for MCworld's elusive Selkies: nomadic half-seal people, to whom the beaches are their only mainstay.

Despite the constant stormy weather, the beaches are the coldest part of MCworld's central continent, and the area's seclusion is valued by the shy Selkies, who spend most of their lives in the frigid Northern Sea. Any myths regarding the creatures shedding their seal skins and walking among the humans is just that: myth. The beaches are in fact the closest the Selkies ever come to life on land. While one might assume that the unceasing storms would be a deterrent to anything seabound, the beaches are completely safe due to the presence of towering iron spires, which line the coast and act as lightning-rods for anything that might attempt to strike down below. These spires are much larger than those which occur in the Highlands proper, meaning that the odds of being struck while on the beaches are vastly lower than being hit throughout the rest of the highlands. For this and other reasons, thousands of fish gather just off the shore, claiming the spires and coves as their own mating grounds. The fish in turn provide ample food for the hungry Selkies, who are often acknowledged as one of MCworld's most gluttonous races, despite their peaceful natures.

However, though the beaches and coves are safe enough, the surrounding area is not without its dangers. Ambitious gremlins may descend from the highlands to hunt the Selkies for their rich blubber. However, the sheer number of Selkies in the area is often a deterrent to the scrawny gremlins, each of whom risks a painful death beneath a staggeringly heavy seal's body. Out at sea, there lurks a much more real danger: Melkai, MCworld's vicious shark-folk, will often swim out of sight, waiting for a careless Selkie to swim too far out to sea for one reason or another. Though the Melkai in the area are not coordinated enough to attack the Selkie herds, they are more than capable to hunting down lone members for dinner.

Of course, if you were looking for a piece to demonstrate all of the above, it unfortunately isn't what you see above. Those two are not Selkies, just two lazy water bimbos who have nothing better to do. Their seal impressions aren't half bad though.
