Description
Holly Short and Artemis Fowl from the Artemis Fowl series.Β Fairies are quite small in the series (just a little over three feet on average), so the difference between Artemis and Holly is quite extreme.Β It's hard to picture (and the graphic novels don't even try to portray it accurately), but I did my best here.Related content

One meter is about three foot three 1/2 inches

Yeah, one meter is a little taller, so I like to go by that.Β (1/2 inch can make quite a bit of difference.)

I really like this picture of the two of them standing together like that. I donβt know what it is particularly, I just really like it. I didnβt actually notice the light issue until you brought my attention to it and now I cant help but notice it, oh well.

You have a lot of respect for the series, I admire that. I also LOVE this picture

I like the fact you respected the height difference. I mean, Holly's supposed to be one meter tall and I often see her as tall as Artemis. This bother me xD
Holly's outfit looks great! I love the way you drew it! Also, the Neutrino looks great! Good job!!

gah. Translations D:< It's not even to a different language lol. Though, as a United States-ian, I guess I appreciate changes like from "alter" to "alter ego." idk.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks as if you've colored over their clothing, particular Arty's, rather messily (like this [link] ). It looks cool but it also obscures the lines you've drawn and the folds in the clothing, which I think is rather unfortunate D: If I look closely, it looks like you've got some pretty awesome shading going on there. But I can't really see it :\
Other than that, it looks great! I really like how you drew Holly, and her hair. And the Neutrino too O:< Shinyyy~~ xDD

lol yeah, in the past I've tended to color things with just flat colors with just a little shading... (like the skin) but now I'm trying to try out some new things to try to give the figures more volume
yeah, it's pretty messy XD! I'd blame that on the fact that my laptop screen is so small (so I tend to have to go by what looks okay when the image is small and you can't see it clearly X3) and the screen doesn't display colors/values very accurately... except I haven't done much digital artwork on larger screens, so I don't know if that's really the problem or if it's just me, lol.
But I see what you mean, I was battling against inadvertently obscuring the lines on Holly's clothes the whole time, and I considered making some of the lines white on Artemis like I did for Holly... But it might have been better to go a bit lighter on parts of the shading on the suit :\
thanks! (:
(btw, what the, you're saying the coloring in that link is messy? XD! it looks very nice to me, and definitely much nicer than mine heh)

mhmm. icic. Yeah, it definitely gives it more volume though I feel that the shading should be more consistent if you do do that--i.e. the face/skin should be shaded somewhat similarly.
Lol, can't you just zoom in? That's what I do ^^ Granted, my screen is pretty huge. But that doesn't mean that I don't zoom in! Aww that sucks :\ I hope your screen can display decent colors. It always frustrates me when colors show up differently on other computers. Then I wonder if I've colored it incorrectly D:
Hm, ic. Well, I think the coloring on Holly looks fine. It blends in so that it seems to make a nice texture. I love the pattern on the gloves btw. On the other hand, I think I was trying to say that it doesn't work so well for Artemis' suit because there shouldn't be those types of folds/"textures." I've quickly drawn out a bit more of what I mean here [link] Sorry for mutilating your drawing!! >w< The parts outlined in red are what I see as the "true" shadows (approximately speaking). The blue parts on mine are the places where I made random/messy lines because I got to lazy to cell shade properly. The blue lines on yours are where I feel that you have drawn unnecessary (and also kinda messy) lines for shadows where there shouldn't be any. Or you're just coloring it. Either way, I feel that they shouldn't be there.
Sorry I'm making such a big deal out of this. TT^TT I really like it. I really do! I guess that it's so awesome, I just wish it could be awesomer xDD
Thanks! (:

Soo, I played around with the image a bit more, but I'm not sure if it's any better. X3 I think I'm just going to leave it alone though and use what I learned here for the stuff I work on after this :3
I thought a lot about editing the way I shaded the skin during the preliminary stages of the drawing, but decided not to (since I'd tried to do exactly that in a previous picture already and I found I couldn't pull it off without a source of some kind X3); I'm always struggling between the concepts of 'unity' and 'variety.'
If an artwork is done the same way everywhere, the image can lose some of its appeal, but if too many aspects contrast too sharply, the image becomes chaotic and also loses appeal. I'm basically just playing around with those ideas (: I came back and edited it anyway and tried a very slight gradient-sort of effect, but... ehh, I don't know. X3
I zoom in CONSTANTLY XD! Actually, I have to work very close to any work when I'm working on my laptop, but that also creates problems because often what looks good really up close doesn't look good when I zoom out to the size the image will generally be viewed at.
(that's what happened with Holly's suit, there were some textures I put on that I liked, but you couldn't even tell they were there whenever I zoomed out, so I tried putting white highlights on instead, but they didn't look right either, so I tried putting them on while I was zoomed out... so they don't look very good at all when you get too close, but I got frustrated and gave up. XD I did go back and try to redo the highlights again later, but I think maybe I made it worse though, lol)
Anyway, it's like doing something without being able to 'see' what you're doing. However, I've been trying to keep a navigation window open while I work in more recent works, which seems to help some :\ I also have trouble with the values of my laptop, since the angle the screen is at affects all the values, and I suspect the values aren't right even when it is at the correct angle. (all the darks appear lighter and further apart in value than they appear on any other computer)
Yeah, you're right, that's pretty much exactly where the 'true shading' is X3 Now that I look at my image closer, I totally see what your saying; when I look at this picture on our mac, the 'real' shading is almost completely obscured. (when I go back and look at my laptop, I still like the messy shading overtop because it has a transparent, overlaying look I've really been into recently, and you can still see the real shading as because it is darker and more defined, but the two values seem to be basically indistinguishable on other computers and so it looks kind of bad XD)
No, everything is a big deal when you're trying to learn and become a better artist; thanks for taking the time to help me, I appreciate it (:

Lol, that's always a good idea. No point in going back and fixing the same pic over and over. At least, that's what I tell myself xDD
I see that you've cut down some of the extraneous shading which definitely gives it a cleaner feel.
icic. Props to you for trying out all those different ways. I don't know if I ever bother to think about it that much xD;; I just go with what looks good and often that can be very time consuming lolz.
ah. Yes! I totally understand what you mean >w< Zoom in.. Zoom out... Noooooo.. NOw it looks terrible ;A;
Ah yah, I hate that too >w< You spend so much time on details that don't even show up in the zoomed out view. I do that too. Well, more in the sense that I spend 10x longer on a pic because I want to fill in every single pixel even though you no one else will ever notice the difference. Holly's suit's highlights look fine if you ask me ^^
Good idea. It must be hard with a tiny screen. :\ Even with my huge monitor screen, I find it annoying to split it into two windows :\ (can't fullscreen that way..) Someday, I'll buy myself a second monitor so that I can have one zoomed out TT^TT My laptop has terrible colors, so I kinda get what you mean >w< It's terrible.. Hope you can work your way around that somehow. ^^
oh icic. So it's mostly because it looks different on your screen then. Hmmm.. that's always frustrating. I hate it when others are seeing something different/worse than what I'm seeing. Well, as long as you like it, that's good ^^
No problem!

Ahh, the gun! See? I'm not the only person who believes in the finger-guard stretching so far xD
Although this looks pretty similar to a version of the Neutrino I drew, but never uploaded.

lol! yeah, I used the gun in the official graphic novel as reference. (: I thought the finger-guard thing they had was pretty awesome, so I thought I would try it... though I'm not sure how practical it would be. XD

I used the graphic novel as a reference for a lot of my designs. No character designs, though, they were terrible.
